I personally vape in public with out hiding it (well except for the movies today I vaped and exhaled into the neck of my shirt). I am thrilled at the looks I get when I am walking around the store vaping. I had one older lady stop me and tell me I was doing something horribly wrong. I handed her a card that explains what I am doing and then I walked away vaping happily. No one has bothered me about it. I want a its not smoke T SHirt lol

I typically don't vape anywhere that I couldn't smoke. When outside somewhere though I just vape away and don't really care what others think. On occasion I'll get someone that asks and I usually get the "I heard about those." or "Do those really work?" lines.

My friends on the other hand give me a lot of crap about it. They are all smokers and refuse to even give it a try even after I've been using vaporizers for over a year and being cigarette free. Recently I had one golfing buddy that bought a gas station kit after I've explained to him the pros and cons numerous times. All I can do is shake my head but at least he took the first step.

When I first started, I still went down with the smokers and stood outside. After about a week, I started just running to the ladies' room, but still felt weird when I got looks from people. So now I duck off into a conference room or storage room, and all is well. When I'm on my own time though, I vape where ever I fell like it! Just be careful that some bar/restaurant owners may not understand, and respect their request if they ask you to stop. I actually feel a sense of empowerment when vaping at a bar as there are a ton of smokers, and I QUIT!! I want to shout it from the roof tops and HOPE they ask me about it so they can quit too! There were 5 smokers in my department at work including myself, and now we have ZERO SMOKERS! One quit cold turkey, but the rest of us are vapers now! Such a wonderful thing, don't be ashamed!!

Being new to vaping I am still pretty self conscious about doing it in public. I do it but I don't put myself out there for everyone to notice me, I like to keep it low pro which almost makes it more suspicious because people look at me like I'm smoking pot or something, which is a completely different subject. I'll get strange looks and weird glances from people I try to just ignore it all. The task of explaining it all becomes quite tiresome at times. I've explained it all to my friends and stuff so I don't get the constant "what is that?" and "how does it work?" type questions. I've found that if whatever your using doesn't look like a analog equivalent you are looked at as a freak because people just don't do not know what these things are. Something I have to just get used to I suppose.

You really will get over it... I felt weird with 808s... Went to a party and had to explain it to everyone. BUT non-smokers like vaping cause it doesn't smell and the cute woman who smoked loved my Johnson Creek chocolate truffle :). Once your crew knows the deal it's not a problem. One night in San Diego, I had way to much to drink and just started vaping away in the lobby of an upscale hotel and then in the bar (used a blue 808d light). No one said a thing or cared. Then I went to two non-smoking bars and did the same--no one cared at all... not the waitress, the bartender, the patrons. Now it's no big deal...

But for new members, that's why I like the blue lights on the cig-style ones because it looks enough like a cig you don't feel too weird but to hotel/bar people the blue light shows you're not trying to light up.

And I try to show some restraint/respect for the place... I don't do it in Walmart or some tiny restaurant that will be a hassle to explain.

The key is changing people's perceptions. If you look like you are trying to hide something or you are doing something wrong, if your PV looks like an analog and you are not willing and prepared to educate the uninformed about what vaping is and is not, then the perception will be that you are still smoking and you are dangerours to others.

We need to vape openly and respectfully and be prepared to educate people about vaping.

I agree with you. I just have to get used to the idea of using a device in public that people are not familiar with. In all honesty if I would have seen one of these being used before I knew about them I'd be awfully skeptical about what that person was doing. I don't want to test the limits just yet in certain places like malls, restaurants, or any place where smoking is prohibited.

I'm still very new to PVs (2 weeks and counting!) but I'm slowly getting better at feeling comfortable vaping in public. I'll do it at work no problem-- I'm an editor so most people have their heads down anyway and my co-workers who sit close-by don't mind at all. I'm pretty sure most of the newsroom doesn't even know.
As far as restaurants and bars, I'll probably abstain for the near future. I'd rather not cause a scene or have to answer questions. I have no problem vaping while walking down city sidewalks and whatnot- I just don't want to make proprietors uncomfortable.
I know, for shame.
