I'm posting in the general section because obviously the RBA section is full of people who could perform brain surgery. I don't believe I'm the only person struggling with this. It generally takes me two or three times to build a KFL that works past an hour of use. I've tried every variation, tquique, and trick in the book.
I believe each time I get a little closer. Generally after and hour or two of tinkering I get something that works.

Usually a situation like this I would just say the heck with it and stick with what works (for me aerotanks.) But yesterday I did a side by side test with a Newminster #47 and a miracle good KFL build. The KFL tasted so much better it was like a completely different e-juice yet it came from the same bottle. With the aerotank it just tasted like a run of the mill net, with the KFL I could really taste the smoky sweetness of the Cavendish.

So I am determined to figure this out. I thought the answer was not heating/pinching the coil and leaving gaps but doing that and making a straight coil is difficult. Last week I ordered som premade coils/wicks from a guy on ebay and in the comments I put this is for use with nets. He wrote me back what is a NET?, so I don't have high hopes with that.

My failure is always the same :burning cotton inside the coil. Its just not wicking up there or my coils have a hot spot. My shaky hands have a very hard time building the coil.

Anyway I just wanted to see if there are other NET vaper's or others with a less than stellar success rate with building the KFL. I would really like to hear from people who struggled and succeeded, or are still struggling. I know I lot get it right easily but I think we need to here from those who have/are struggling.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulty building the KFL. It took me several weeks to figure it out, but I had bad clones to start with. You will get better at the more you build.

The easiest way to wrap coils is to invest in one of these: Amazon.com: Artistic Wire, Coiling Gizmo, Econo Winder

Then modify a wire clothes hanger to fit in the holes. This will give you the perfect size to use with 28g. After you get the coil installed make sure you use the right amount of cotton. To little and it will burn up quickly, to much and it will choke the coil and also burn.

The hardest part for me was the wicking, use enough so there is some resistance when pulling it back and forth through the coil but not a lot. Pull the cotton tails up and put the chimney barrel on and screw it down. Cut the cotton just a little above the top and use tweezers to push the tails down the sides. Move the cotton tails back and forth with the tweezers to spread out the tails. Prime, assemble, and bottom fill.

This was the easiest way for me after months of building, hang in there you will get it.

Some kayfun clones are known to have poorly machined juice channels which prevent good wicking, even with perfect coils. A correctly made kayfun will tolerate less than perfect coils. I have clumsy hands and poor up close vision. My current coils have been working for months, with a dry burn and rewick when the vape gets weak.

If your kayfun is properly machined, patience and a little more practice will get you where you want to be. Good luck!

Your post is full of new info to me and I've been going after this for going on 6 weeks. I did not know that too little cotton could burn inside the coil. I just tried a different brand cotton this morning and it isn't has hard compressed as the other brand, that may be part of my issue. The first brand you could fluff it back up with the tweezers as you described so well.

I am a believer that people learn better from those who were challenged than those who had no issues. Thanks for the post.

One trend I think I notice is if there is a whistle/gurgle sound at the get go the coil will burn the cotton within an hour. If it is a clean sound on the intake it is usually a winner. I don't know what that means.

I am still trying to get that clean sound. I get the gurgle sound even though it is not flooded. It is working fine and no burnt taste. But that gurgle sound is always there. No excess juice when I blow out of the hair hole either.

Blow out the airhole? Do you mean you are blowing in the driptip having air come out the airhole or do you mean you're holding the kayfun upside down & blowing into the airhole?

Gurgling generally happens due to one of two things. Either your chamber is flooded or you're not using enough wick material and its wicking too much.

I am holding the Kayfun upside down and blowing into the airhole. I believe it's the wicking. I haven't mastered the right amount yet.

Does it have adjustable air control? If so, try opening it up some more. Another possible fix if that doesn't work is to lift your coil higher off the deck a little bit more.

Cotton balls and cotton yarn make for a nice vape, but cotton just don't last, and will slowly burn.

On my authentic Kayfun Lite, I started using braided silica to make my wicks. Still get a real nice vape, and the silica lasts for a very long long time.

I would occasionally get flooding using cotton, but since using braided silica, I have not had any flooding at all.

The photos below show the install of cotton yarn, but it's the same procedure for braided silica.

BTW ... In order to pull a double piece of 2mm braided / hollow silica through your coil, you will need to make the coil on a 2.8mm (7/64") drill rod ... This will allow enough room inside the coil in order to pull the double piece of 2mm silica through it.

To get the right amount of cotton (for me anyway), I thread the wick in the coil just short of "tug resistance", then I put the lower chimney part over the cotton. Pull the cotton out of the top of the lower chimney part, and cut it flush with the top of the lower chimney. Push the cotton back down on the sides of the coil. Juice the cotton so it doesn't burn. Put on the top chimney part, then the tank, the top. Fill from bottom.
Works for me most of the time. Ymmv

I had the same problem with my EH pro. I could make a good coil, but couldn't get a wick worth sour owl doodle with cotton. I switched to rayon for wick material and 99% of my problems vanished. Now, I don't even rewick till my coil gunks up and flavor goes south. It's some good stuff for wicks, give it a try.

This is basically the same build I do. I add one more step. After juicing the cotton I reach in with a micro screwdriver and arrange the wick again making sure I can see the deck at the juice channels before screwing the top half of the chimney on.

Another idea would be to get an infinite magma clone, that way you can peek under the hood and see what's going on. I wish I had started with it as it's the easiest to build and fun to use. I believe you mentioned using a vw/vv device and wanting a lower wattage mod. Once you get the coil resistance you like by adjusting the mod to battery level then you will know what coil resistance you prefer for the juices you like. Just a crazy idea, but might be worth the $30 to learn on.

you've been struggling with building a kayfun for weeks.

maybe this NET juice you speak of is too thick to wick properly in a suction-based system like a kayfun. Have you tried normal juices?

You've tried tightening the airflow, correct? Thicker juices need a tighter airflow to suck up the juices to the wick. Do primer puffs help? Next time you get a dry hit, cover the airflow hole and take a draw without firing. you should see a bubble or two come up. Does this help wet the wick...or does it just flood your kayfun?

Or maybe your clone is a piece of garbage.

After a month of tinkering with my KFL i finally had to get rid of it...
I might go back to a kayfun style tank in the future, but at the moment Im hoping for more intovation on auto-drippers like the 3D and another one i saw on here that was in prototype you pushed down on driptip and the tank dropped a few drops onto the build deck from the top. I think it was called the big dripper??? Its been awhile since i seen the post and havnt heard anything bout it for awhile
