I have not actually started vaping yet, but I will soon. I am in the army and I am currently deployed to afghanistan. I have tried to quit analogs several times over the past few years and always end up going back.

I am going home for R&R in a few days and dont want to smoke around the wife and kid anymore.

Now I have 510 on the way to my house in the states along with several different ejuices from awesomevapor.com

I have to admit untill about 3 days ago I had never even heard of e-cigs, now I can't wait to get mine.

How many of you quit analogs cold turkey and went right to vaping and how hard was it to make the change?

Welcome HappyHolligan and 1st, THANK YOU for the sacrifice and service to all of us here stateside! Happy to hear you are coming home for some R & R...well deserved! I have smoked for 40 years with 3 lame attempts at quitting which lucky if I made 8 hours (sleeping)...I started 2 weeks ago today, got my 1st kit of a 902(like a 510) and haven't smoked one analog since! MIRACLE! I just got my Ego kit today and vaping happily! Your wife will be so happy, wish I could get my hubby on board! He's struggling with the cold turkey method!

I get a nagging 'missing something' sometimes, but not often and when I do, I drink a big glass of water! My breathing has VASTLY increased even after my 3rd day, amazing.....no hacking a lung either, which is AWESOME as my job is on the phone w/customers all day! Just a VERY pleasant and unexpected experience, I hadn't heard about them either...so glad I found this place and my E-cigs....VAPE ON!

Welcome to ECF and..... Thank you for serving in the Army! I love our military people and appreciate all they do for us! :toast:

You're going to love e-cigs! I started vaping this week and haven't completely quit analogs but I hope to soon but for now it's helped me cut WAY down! It does take some trial and error to get used to the e-cigs and it won't be exactly like smoking an analog but it doesn't take long to get the hang of them!

I switched to e-cigs without any more analogs cold turkey. Have had no side effects. For me it was a no brainer switch. No other efforts have worked for me. Not everyone can switch cold turkey. It takes some people awhile to give up the analogs at first. That's OK. Don't beat up on yourself if that happens. Everyone at their own pace. I think you'll find them a little more distasteful as time goes by. Just keep on vaping.

You might want to consider upgrading to an Ego or Ego Mega XL for longer battery life per charge. I read that the battery life on the 510 is quite short. Some others might suggest other brands that have longer life too. I love my Egos!

Thanks for your service to our country!!!

HH: Congrats on your PV and My thanks to you (and your wife & family!) for the job you guys are doing for the rest of us!!

I haven't had any ash in 5 weeks. I had my last 5 days after I got my 501. Part of it was changing my routine a bit, the rest was the mindset. I've tried patches and cold turkey. The only thing that worked in the past was being pregnant - couldn't even stand the smell (shudder) but each time sometime after the kiddlet something would "happen" and I'd use it as an excuse to remeet 20 of my best friends! This time has been very different. Almost easy. Not perfect, but easier than I thought it could be!

What part of KY? I'm just south of Cincy!

I can't wait to try all the flavors I think when I get home and open the box it will be like baskin robins. I wont know which flavor to choose.
I am sure that it will work. the plan is to have no analogs with me when I land and the wife is going to charge the ecig and have it ready for me when I get off the plane. just have to keep from caving and buying any smokes.

I was smoking for about 20 years.
Got my first e-cig [808] about 6 weeks ago.
Couldn't quit right away.
First cut down from 20 analogs to 8.
2 weeks later reduced to 3-5 analogs and kept like that till yesterday - when my box mod arrived [http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/requests-opinions-reviews/119638-em-riva-vs-3-7-box-mod.html ].

Now I'm over 24 hours smoke free!

I think a lot depends on right equipment to hit that sweet spot.

Most of the people believe that Ego/Riva are best to actually quit. I'm going with box mod (technically its same thing but with different look and more practical).

My success equipment:

2xAA Box Mod with slow change LED + NEW 510 Mega Low Resistance Cartomizers + WOW Vapor WOWBoy smokeless electronic cigarette juice

Welcome to ECF Happyhooligan. I'm US Army (Ret) myself, and thank you for your service to our country. I started smoking in AIT about 42 years ago. Tried many times to quit cold turkey and a few other gimics they came up with during the 70's. Anyone remember the Aqua Filter? Anyhow, I quit cigs completely the first day I had my Ego kit. I was using 2-3 packs a day. Thats been over 7 weeks now and haven't had a real cig since. It didn't work out so well for my Brother-in-law tho. He hated the e-cig from the first day and I assume thats all he used it. One day.

I had no problems with withdrawals and have not even wanted an analog for the last 7 weeks. Hope it works out as well for you.

Soldier, shut up and soldier.

One of the registered suppliers on the site is in Henderson, KY -about an hour and change north of you! (when you're stateside.)- if you need accessories before you head back you might try them - might even be worth a meet-up! I think it's Blue Grass Vapors (not the forum social group, but an actual dealer website)

We lived in Paducah, KY for almost 7 years - I know the area you're living in. Don't know if you've got munchkins, but we use to go hang out at Land Between the Lakes and picnic and if we could swing it we'd have dinner or lunch at Patty's If you go, make SURE you save room for dessert! Bring a cooler for a doggy bag if you need to! Their desserts are incredible! And they have Miniature Golf and a Petting Zoo (I know weird for a restaurant, but great fun for the kids!)

Good luck with your PV. This site has been a huge help to me. Wish I'd found it before I bought, but better late than never!

I quit cold turkey on August 20th, and havent touched one. My wife is still smoking, and that has not even tempted me.

For me, it is mind over matter. I was so excited for August 20th to come, and had not used the ecig other than trying it out. My problem was I nearly ran out of pre-filled carts before my e-liquid showed up.

Make sure to get some strong e-liquid for those times you get serious cravings. I found myself feeling like something was missing (It was) I was no longer going to the garage every 45 minutues to smoke a cig, and read my wifes us magazine, which was always the ritual as I smoked my analog for 7 minutes.

Another posted on another thread to go to the garage with your e-cig. But that feeling passes, as you slowly remove that habit of going outside to smoke. Now I love the fact that I can stay put on the couch as I vape.

Do yourself a favor and order Geoff's blend from Tasty Vapor. By far my favorite juice. Good throat hit that helps immitate the smoke feel, and a great sweet flavor. Do not get this juice if you dont want sweet. In my opinion it is not overpoweringly sweet.

Good luck. Buy an Riva or Ego if you really want a nice e-cig to start. I am saving up for one, but I am pretty sure my 510 parts will fit the ego.

.

One more thing:

In your case, if you are going back overseas, it could be much easier to use box mod [have 2 of them - in case one breaks down] and 10-20 rechargeable $5 batteries.

If one of the mods brakes down - you can always get in touch with whoever can solder [nearest supporting/engineering unit] and can get it fixed or use old parts to make new one.

Depends on what exactly you are doing - if you are involved in field operations, you may want to get one of the all-metal mods.

And, of course, you may want to get one of the mods without led light [snipers etc].

Happyhooligan - first, another "thank you" for serving our great country! As you've read, the time it takes you to quit is different for everyone. Before I heard of ecig.s I was trying to quit w/ Chantix. It helped the nicotine cravings but not the "ritual" of smoking. I needed the hand-to-mouth action and the feeling of the smoke hitting my lungs. When I got my first PV, that took care of what was missing. I was able to completely go off the cigarettes. Now I don't take the Chantix because the e-cigs are successful and the Chantix made me nauseous. But, as others have said here, some ppl have to gradually cut down on the cigs until they no longer want one. And either way you go, it still takes a certain amount of willpower. E-cigs are NOT the same as smoking a cigarette. But I really believe the e-cigs make it so much more "do-able" than without them. Good luck to you and let us know how you are doing!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO YOUR COUNTRY!

Yes, this gizmo works. I meant to slow down my all consuming addiction to tobacco, and I wound up quitting in two days. In all fairness, I had some days or moments that I missed what I thought was my 'ol' friend.' So I asked myself...do you want to put tobacco back into your body? NO! Did I miss the nasty ashtrays? NO! Did I miss burning holes in my clothes? NO! So I thought, why would I want to pick them back up? I don't! It's been so much easier than I thought. Yeah, I'm excited that I haven't inhaled 2158 analogs in 50 days and so is my husband!:)
