Just a heads up folks.. Don't buy this e-cig.. because if you do.. you've got bigger problems than quitting smoking! LOL

Aside from that if you Do find yourself in such a situation.. for goodness sake.. don't drop it.....

(This was meant to be amusing as well as educational so if you mods have to move this to the Lounge I won't be offended.)

That is the "whitest" jail I have ever seen.

That is the "whitest" jail I have ever seen.

Do believe modern jails separate prisoners methodically, have segregated and integrated populations, for a variety of reasons and purposes. Had a close friend who worked at a fed pen. Good observation.

Personally I think that depriving felons of cigarettes (and particularly without an alternative) constitutes cruel and usual punishment. Applying the tobacco "harm" criteria in a penal institution offends me even as a libertarian I have utter respect for lawful order.

But as the saying goes, "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." Can't help but think some Ky citizens must be aware of the deterrent value of depriving felons of cigarettes. However, I understand the warden's concerns for his staff and prisoners' safety. Such concern is consistent with a regard for appropriate and lawfully proportional punishment.

The fellow should be recognized and rewarded for his efforts.

Good luck. :)

Agreed. Even the Geneva Convention regarding the treatment of prisoners of war states:

"The use of tobacco shall be permitted."

and

"Canteens shall be installed in all camps, where prisoners of war may procure foodstuffs, soap and tobacco and ordinary articles in daily use. The tariff shall never be in excess of local market prices."

Source:
Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, 75 U.N.T.S. 135, entered into force Oct. 21, 1950.

Coming from an HBO perspective that was surprisingly unbiased.

Bravo for that fellow.
It did avoid the the slop chest factor that comes into play in a lot of prisons with them. The jail where they were invented sells them at much lower cost than most other places I understand.

The places I tried to find cigalikes wanted like $8-15 each for what they called a disposable. And refills for like $5 each? No thanks. Flavors that suck, cartridges that pop and batteries that suddenly fail?

If I recall correct, that jail sells the "disposable" for a couple of bucks and monitors their use. It seems as though the profits go back to the jail for technology upgrades.

HBO could have easily found disgruntled prisoners to put a negative spin on the story while casting an image of how fat cat warden dude is getting mad rich from suffering prisoners addicted to his poison. Instead they chose to tell the good side of the story and showcase folks who are trying to get themselves out of a whirlpool of a bad lifestyle. Bravo HBO.

And thanks John for showing us the story.

Um almost every aspect of jail is kind of a deterrent to crime if you ask me. From the bars and barbed wire keeping you IN from the having to poop in front of others.

Oddly enough if you add all these deterrents together it actually causes MORE criminal behavior.

I understand. If I ever had to poop in front of others, my personality and behavior would never be the same.

The nicest jail I have ever been in was the jail for the Criminally Insane in Maryland. It was also the most fatal one (to staff and others) but it was pretty nice.

The worst jail of all time: any jail in AZ. They get worse funding than the school system and that is SAYING SOMETHING.

If government control is such a wonderful idea, why are prisons some of the most dangerous places on earth? I have mused over this for a while.

Well my theory is, you take a bunch of offenders and offer them almost NO programming or help, and then you put the newly criminal and terrified in the mix, not to mention the fact that the drug lords (despite being housed in different areas and whatnot together) and they get busy like, gathering up recruits and etc., and then the newly criminal and terrified get raped and they are like "F this I am DEFINITELY going to get me some (insert whatever drug) when I get out this is the WORST," (a very high majority of first time offenders are drug related, at least where I live but END users, not necessarily dealers.

Then you have the type of personality who thinks ah, caring for a bunch of prisoners would be a NICE thing to do. The warden politely informed me during orientation at the prison my son was at for a night the EVERY SINGLE YOUTH arriving, even their first offense, was "like a hardened criminal you can't trust them, it changes them immediately into hardened felons at ONCE." I wanted to ask why my kid (jailed one day for yes, a first time end user drug offense" was okay then but I didn't ask because the guy was like, HOPELESS.

He told us to mention if we felt unsafe as we might be subject to "lewd behavior and gestures." Then he banged on some window to "show his tough," when NOTHING was happening.

He was a talker, so when we got to a cell kind of deeper in the prison, and the guard in charge was not paying much attention there was a fair amount of ".........ory gestures" and like, well, I finally said, "Sir, while I neither support nor condone gestures of a sexual nature and they certainly don't make me feel unsafe, you said that I should report them to you. It does make me a little uneasy the neither you nor your cohort have NOTICED but hey. It's fine by the way if I am ever dealing 1;1 with a prisoner and he tries to .........e at me, I am probably going to start laughing, and go, "Oh, kiddo. I realize you have been taught here that .........ion is a POWERFUL gesture, even by the guards ,but I feel nothing but pity for you. You are .........ing at a woman old enough to be your grandmother, and that is terribly sad. I just wanna help you get out of here, can we work on THAT."

The warden and I did not get along. Also, after orientation I resigned. There was more to it, but I knew I could never last in there.

I've watched shows on prisons in England, older ones, but they are still all about rehabilitation.

US prisons are not. Unless you call making (insert whatever) for pennies on the dollar to help pay for your stay, but I do not.

Being an observer of your interactions with the warden would have been worth the price of admission.

The spooky ones for me are the sherrifs with absolutely no spending oversight. They get X amount of money to run a jail and they keep the rest. No taxes no oversight no nothing. It’s one of the most profitable jobs in government anywhere in the world.

I tried to keep my comments to a dull roar with the warden, as I was scared he'd shove me in a cell. But then, he was talking alot about the "suicide dog" they brought in to like, "cheer up" the prisoners "it happens a lot" (he said it smugly.)

I said, "Oh gee, did you know the juvenile prison has close to zero suicides because they watch carefully, isolate them, put lead aprons on them etc." Isn't that actually cheaper than a dog, also, if anything could make me cry and become suicidal in a prison it would be hanging with a cute dog for 20 minutes and then it leaves. I vote for the aprons."

Also I suck as a caretaker of prisoners I was eating snus the WHOLE TIME. I had it contrabanded carefully in my bra. I was not about to GIVE it to any prisoners I needed it for me and having to walk/stand on concrete for like 5 hours straight.

Warden was garrulous. He made us late for lunch WE HAD A TYPE ONE DIABETIC in the group, They were all like "We don't let the diabetics have their commissary money because they won't eat healthy." (Earlier.)

Then they were like, "We really need to get this done can you eat something out of the vending machine?"

It was at that point where I was like, "THIS PLACE DEFINES hypocrisy, fear, and lack of civility. I asked for an escort to the Social Work Area, and they said they would but they didn't. I went on my own. No one questioned me also I did not get eaten by a zombie convict, then I grabbed THE REST of my contraband out of my locker and just left. The diabetes thing.... It left me speechless. I started to say "YOU DON'T LET PRISON--" and then I was like fine if diabetes lady wants this job she can HAVE it.

No warden dude just like had a FREAK out at me a couple times but I was like "Well, he seems to genuinely love his prison and hate the prisoners so I'm probably safe."

I bet that snus was like a felony or something. However, I kinda needed it.

The warden talked about contraband and how some worker started out giving a prisoner a stick of gum, the naked pictures and her address and money and some other crap, I forget. BUT he was like "it can be as simple as a stick of gum to start." And I was like, "Oh for the love of Christ, anyone who would be that dumb should turn herself in honestly.

But, Gum. Very very bad.

I mean, it was one of those such improbable stories, honestly, that as it built you wondered, "Is life actually real?"

I wonder what stories I would have had if I like worked there a week but I did ask the social work department if they had ever been fully staffed and they were like, "No." And my uppity self was like, "I could possibly do some good here if not interfered with, but like, JUST NO I am better than this." Sigh.

Not all prisons. The worst are the American ones and some in former third world countries. The places with the least government. The worst American prisons are those run by sherrifs in the south. There a bulk amount of money is offered per inmate and the sherrif gets to spend it however he likes including just keeping it. They keep most of it.

Too good, it would have been worth double the price of admission.
And we were able to glide effortlessly from not buying Crossbar's to wardens and lead aprons.
