Cleaning some old drip tips today and I feel sick. More reason to keep everything clean.
Luckily it’s an atty just lying about with (two specifically, but these aren’t even chimneys and decks, just two old drip tips)

I checked my current straight after and it’s crystal clean.
I’ll make sure it always remains that way. How often do you guys clean your attys?

Everyday !. Seeing as half of the handful of liquids i vape with are real dark, there's no other option other than to clean the atomizer and then re wick the next in rotation. It became routine. I get through a lot of cotton buds (q tips). And i also use interdental brushes for the tiny juice channels and around the deck. I figure it's worth me cleaning out the juice channels in case of a build up of juice over time. The inside of the chimney can get quite a lot of build up too even in just a couple of days.

I have not cleaned mine, but, given Z's pictures, I think that will change.

one of them I haven’t vaped for close to a year so I’m not too bothered. The other I vaped as recently as a few weeks back

must have been filthy then

although I clean my stuff (not a brilliant machine like many have, just hot water, soap and a rinse and dry)
And I get into the chimneys and build deck
but I rarely consider the inside of tips!

It seems worthwhile to me to clean the whole thing when putting in a new coil.

no that’s a lie. Phew. Just realised they were both the old kfuns

the 3 week old one wasn’t to bad. Still
Every couple/few days and rewick I’ll be checking those tips
Only took me 5 years to learn that lesson smh

I only do tobacco so I don't mind having some left over liquid in tanks/RDAs. Most compliments each other and sometimes I discover new mixes to.
I regularly clean top caps and tips though...just pull a piece of toilet paper through.
On the rare occational I flush thanks and RDAs with tepid water... then blow it dry with low pressured compressed air.

I hear ya Z. I don't clean my stuff often enough. Most of the time my DT's are not that bad, but occasionally they are. Then I do more regular cleanings for a while, but in a few weeks I'm back to my old habits

It doesn't really bother me too much TBH, I'm nowhere near a germophobe, but once things get that yuckie even I get grossed out. I have a bunch of white DT's and I find that helps me see when they get nasty, dark ones need more attention to stay on top of.

Every time I take the top off a tank to refill, I wipe it with a paper towel (including drip tip) When I re-wick, I just rinse everything with hot water. When I put a new coil in my RTAs, I also use alcohol after rinsing (cheap vodka actually) I don't vape as many ml as many people and have several in rotation so they don't build up as fast.
What sucks is the other day I went to re-wick my RTA (coil just needed a quick dry-burn) I had stuffed the rayon in so tight it ruined my coil (26 ga Kanthal) pulling the wick out. I really don't want to do a new coil just to put in a fresh wick!

Every once in a blue moon: ultrasonic cleaner. But after I pull out the wicks usually all I do is following these steps (this is with Nichrome 80 complex coil builds such as aliens),
  • rinse with a bit of sparkling water,
  • blow vigorously with my mouth to get most of the remaining water out,
  • dry burn─gently at first so giving it enough time to evaporate the water while trying not to put too much stress on the coil build and also I keep giving it enough patience after that to gradually start to glow more evenly towards the legs of the coils (as the black soot once it smolders it takes some time to extinguish, by itself),
  • let it cool down enough to avoid putting too much stress on the coil build the moment when I pour the water over it,
  • rinse with sparkling water again, blow vigorously with my mouth again, dry burn again, let it cool down again, and keep repeating these steps a few more times if necessary,
  • do a final rinse with tap water, and blow vigorously with my mouth again,
  • dry the coils and the deck by gently pulsing at low wattage,
  • let it cool down again, and always remember to measure the resistance before proceeding to rewick, etc.
The sparkling water is to remove all the soot that gets stuck in various locations between the core wires and the wrap wire that surrounds the core wires. I find that it gives better results compared to tap water and also it effectively eliminates the need to use a soft steel wire brush that can't reach between the core wires anyway and that only ends up marring the coil build giving it that metallic understaste so I never understood why so many people keep recommending a soft steel wire brush. (That is, apart from being able to sell brushes and then keep selling more coils faster after that...)

As for how long it usually takes before I need to rewick. I vape at high wattage so my coils gunk up slower compared to your average low wattage vaper, and, this seems counter-intuitive perhaps, but nevertheless it's the whole truth... what's more, I never get black soot, nor even more than just a really very tiny little bit of dark brown gunking, anywhere on the inside of my RBAs and drip tips. This leads me to conclude high wattage vaping on decent quality complex coil builds is an excellent way to avoid significantly overheating the juice if you, like me, know how to fine tune everything in such a way that the positioning of the coils versus airflow, the air hole adjustment, the wicking job, etc., all are working sufficiently in balance with each other. Sufficiently here meaning you need to be capable, and willing─especially willing, to learn from tried experience to be able to get there. :p

Even after just 4ml (one tank full) of either Capella's Double Chocolate, Cinnamon, Choc Fudge Brownie, Cappuccino and Irish Cream the wick which sits inside the coil is burnt black. The coil, when dry burning, is like a sparkler on halloween when i blow on it. And the inside of the chimney looks like it's coated in Marmite. Though all these liquids have been sitting around for a few months so they're as dark as they're going to get.

I use various variations of lip balm (anything from chapstick to Vaseline, to lip stick) daily and up to multiple times a day, so I actually have to clean my tips as often as I rewick as much due to that as due to ejuice...

So I do clean everything every time I rewick, inside and out.
