So insurance companies should just go bankrupt (and leave people with paid up policies with nothing) when a major catastrophe strikes? Reinsurance exists to prevent that when really big losses occur.

IMO,
A business should not be permitted to "offload" risk with the sole motivation of being able to assume more risk.
