I haven't (yet) had much success in creating a vapable tobacco flavor. [My first attempt, using Tobacco Absolute and (attempting to follow) Nuck's recipe, didn't work out so good. I'll keep trying.]

As I search for alternatives, I stumbled across a blog entry by ECaruthers in the Basenotes Community (fragrances) entitled "The Smell of a Tobacco Shop." It states (in part):
I’ve bought loose tobacco and made my own extracts. I’ve bought tobacco absolute from The Perfumer’s Apprentice and tried a couple of dilutions. I’ve bought colognes that have tobacco notes.

It was actually difficult to find a lose tobacco that just smelled like tobacco. Most had some sort of flavoring added. (Luca Turin has commented that most tobacco is flavored with vanilla.) I initially picked Virginia #1 pipe tobacco. I found that extraction of the aromatics from that tobacco was successful with a water and alcohol mix, or with 160 proof (80%) vodka...The Virginia #1 has a light smell and it’s a bit sweet. I don’t know how else to describe it.
[All emphases above are mine.]

Potential leads in my (our?) quest for a vapable tobacco flavor?
  1. The vanilla easily can be implemented (e.g., I had purchased some Vanillin from Perfumer's Apprentice).
  2. The extraction from pipe tobacco is, of course, problematic. How to eliminate/control/measure the nicotine being extracted along with the flavor?
I post this here on the chance that it might trigger ideas by more experienced DIYers.

I too have used Nucks recipe and did not like it much. I only use it now to “mix” with. I use it in my tobacco mixes now with some success.

I use the Nuck recipe to dilute higher strength liquid instead of just straight PG. That way I don’t get such reduced flavor when I thin the high nic liquid.

I also use it in menthol and RY4 mixes.
I also mix it with “0” strength commercial liquids so they go further.
Then I use the combined “0” to dilute higher strength liquid. All in all it works out, but a pain because I am mixing all the time. I purchased too much higher strength liquid and need to reduce it.

I have one recipe I call the sink (as in kitchen sink)
Menthol
RY4
Coffee
Tobacco (any flavor)

Still looking for a better tobacco flavor DIY liquid.

Good Ideas, makdevo! I also am continuing my quest for a better tobacco flavor DIY liquid.

As for "the sink," see this post of mine. Great minds... and all that.;)

Just as taste is subjective; so is smell. I have no clue what tobacco in its raw form smells like before it is adulterated by tobacco processing companies. I think the key in this discussion is that you find a tobacco you like and successfully extract a useable liquid for vaping that retains the essence that drew you to it. I would be all over that post.

I got some 'rustica' absolute that instantly made me remember my Grampa's pipe ~ and I haven't smelled that for over 50 years. Unreal how things are connected, memories and smells. It was lucious, it also tastes lucious if you love fine tobacco. There's a link to buy on that page. If you ever get a chance to walk through a drying shed on a tobacco farm, DO IT!
You'll never forget the aroma/taste experience of that. I don't think there's too many of those kind of farms left, we did this years ago (Like 30+) visiting a friends' home, and it was harvest time. In Wisconsin, we used to have a huge tobacco market here. The Edgerton/Janesville Wi area had huge shipping warehouses multiple blocks long on the rail heads since way back in the 1800's. Those were the days.

Yes I agree, I love that smell. My uncle was a tobacco farmer and I remember the summers I would be visiting and the smells as the current crop was drying.

Vapornine carries a juice called Carolina that really reminds of those smells.
