Rhapsody in Blue -- George Gershwin

This is just part 1. I'll post part 2 in the next comment. They're really worth watching (about 16 min total).

Bernstein re-invented Gershwin to make him suitable for the classical ear, thereby introducing this iconic American composer to international audiences. In these performances, Bernstein's piano playing isn't what it was when he recorded his finest version in 1959 with the Columbia Symphony for CBS Masterworks (now Sony), but it works well enough. (Graffman's 1979 version with Mehta conducting the New York Philharmonic features the finest, brightest, most intelligent piano playing you'll ever hear for this Gershwin classic, but Mehta's vision for orchestral accompaniment to Graffman doesn't meet the high bar set by Bernstein's numerous performances.)
