The Weller Dual Heat Mod

Really?? I thought it was way over the top...considering you can just buy attys for 5 bucks and they last for a month..... Forever may be too strong of a word for longevity of this thing.... but upwards of 50k hours of use at the current watt density (3.7v 5w)
I haven't tested yet with 7.4v yet.... I'm kinda scared at what would happen to a cart at 14 watts.....

The thing about atties is that a lot of people are just the same as me and don't claim on the guarantee's, and it's not exactly unusual to have atties DOA or else only last a day or two and all that kind of thing soon rockets the cost of atties. I think that's why everyone is always screaming for a more reliable one, but I guess I have to admit I would be very reluctant to buy one for 100 dollars unless it was pretty certain that it 'would' last for a very long time. I guess I would have to claim on the guarantee if I spent that much money on one.

I just checked the Home Depot website, and all they are listing now is a Weller soldering iron that just turns on and off....no high or low settings. I wonder if you can order them direct from Weller?

P. S.- the Lowes website has this exact iron listed as well.

warp1900...I am sorry if I offended you with my post. I am totally new to modding and have not created one yet, so my questions or comments may seem "dumb" to you.....but I am only trying to learn. I didn't do a complete search,honestly, because I didn't think about it. I was trying to see if I could get most of the modding parts on one website to save a little on shipping fees.

I think the dual heat soldering iron mod is great...and might be easy enough for me to try for my first one- again, sorry if my "newbieness" offended your professional honor!

Although the atty attachment I made does make it a bit long compared to how I converted the cold heat iron, I wanted to still be able to use it as a soldering Iron if I wanted.....Unlike the cold heat soldering Iron this one really does solder great!!

Did you ever post a guide to how you converted the Cold Heat iron?

I will Warp...just had some other posts ignored or answered kinda rough. I am SERIOUSLY trying to study and follow your RCA jack thread "RCA DIY".
I really like that concept, but I do have a question....when you add the female connector of the RCA jack to the atties, and you put on that cover, is it easy to remove the cover and connector when the atty dies, and you have to replace it?

The RCA plug that is used for the atomizer, is actually an adapter, meaning you can screw it on or off whenever you need to replace the atomizer.

That does help, thank you. I see what you mean in the pics. With this setup, it might be easier to make a Nico-Stick with the RCA jack, and do this so that I can use my 510, 901, or 801 on it without any other modding (on my first attempt).

Did you ever post a guide to how you converted the Cold Heat iron?

Unfortunately I am not very good at giving instructions on how I do things but basicly I made it so that the atty 'plugs' into the black tube where the soldering Iron tip used to go, it presses against a piece of springy copper that makes the outside atty conection and also makes it a tight fit in the tube and once it's pushed in all the way, the centre atty connection is made by a fixed pin in the iron. It's surprising that just a simple push fit against the centre connector makes a good enough contact but it does and works perfectly and I can 'plug' in 'any' penstyle atty , although I do have to sandpaper off some of the paint to get the outer connection if they are painted ones but I don't have that problem with the unpainted TW 801's.

I have made a couple of mods that use the same idea of just being able to 'plug' the atty in and haven't had any problems with getting a good enough centre
connection. The only thing to remember about the centre pin connection is that it mustn't block the air hole in very centre of the atty.

Hi space....yes I did the same thing but it only lasted about 3 weeks, so you might still have a couple of more weeks left before it packs up..lol. It is a bit of a pain working out how to fit a momentary button in it's place but the one I got from an old stereo has been working fine (touch wood) since I fitted it and the stereo had loads of them so I have still got plenty of replacements if needed.
The great thing about the weller is that it already has a momentary button and I think it will probably last for a very long time. Although I only made the weller as a backup.

Yeah, I recently took apart an old printer and got some buttons there. (also some LEDs, I swapped out the originals with green ones)

I might try the Weller, but I've found I don't like the 510 atty at more than standard voltage.

Are you using 'three' AA rechargeable's and a dummy battery with the cold heat then? There is a weller that only has one heat setting and only takes three AA sized batteries....that would only give around 4.2 volts fully charged.

That's right. Made a cool looking dummy with parts from the printer.
