Ego Twist 650 (or smaller)- $20 or less
Kanger Evod for your Clearomizer -$5-6 each
Charger- $4
juice- $4-10

Altogether, you should never have to spend more than $30-40 the first time if you're not buying a lot of juice.

I got ripped off in the Mall the same way about 5 years ago, with the Blue, and it was so frustrating with the lack of nicotine and so ridiculously expensive that I started smoking again almost immediately.. That was until I met a friend who had an Ego. I've been using the Ego Twist batteries since I quit 10 months ago after smoking heavily for almost 15 years, and I LOVE the change. Looking back, for me the Cigarette diameter sized ones would just have never delivered enough nicotine or quickly enough for me to quit. The charge on an Ego lasts for at least a day with the 650Mah, about 2-3 days with the 1110Mah depending on your usage instead of a few hours. The 1100 is really pretty long and was too conspicuous for me, but it lasts forever. Since the 650 lasts a whole day, and the 400Mah being slightly shorter, I'd say go with one of those.

The amount of liquid held will depend on the clearomizer/cartomizer that you use; I started with the Vision ce4 Rebuildable clearomizer, if you don't mind the upkeep and that they hold a little less Juice they are good, they are also streamlined and pretty inconspicuous.. that said, I recently switched to the Kanger Evod, and I am totally converted. (The Kanger T3 is larger to hold more liquid and therefore will be too big diameter-wise, if you're looking for a streamlined look). I think they would be much better than the Ce4 Clearos for a new user, I wish I had started with them! They never leak as the Vision Clearomizer can when unpside down or just in general, and because it holds slightly more juice you won't have to fill it so much. They also seem to give a lot more vapor and they are very easy to maintain, since they have a bottom coil instead of a top coil you don't have to dry burn and clean them like with the Visions.

To order my battery, if it's a 650 I go to Sweet-Vapes (they have great Customer Service, Warranties and are a Genuine Brand Reseller. They also have the best tasting flavors just in my opinion.) If S-V's juices are a little pricey The Best eJuice - VapeDudes.com - Hand-Crafted Gourmet & Organic - 100% USA Ingredients is Kosher and also good with lots of variety). Both sites have a few Tobacco flavors and a variety of others, all of which that I've tried (especially S-v) tasted on the mark. Though I've only tried a few, the flavors were good here; VaperSociety.com has 40% off your first purchase. Vape Dudes has a one time 40% off, but it's a limited lottery that resets at 8am and can be hard to get. Beware sites that seem too low-priced and don't state exactly what they put in their juice, it should only be the very basic ingredients; VG/PG, Natural flavoring, and Nicotine)

If you want the bigger 1200Mah Ego Twist, this is the only site that has them for only $20 instead of $27- Welcome to FreE-Cigs.com - Live Free. However, this site has OFF BRAND on their other tech, so I stay away from items except the Battery as Generic brand Cartos seriously break easily and/or quickly. They have good customer service as well as a 30 day Warranty on the Batteries.

It is always good to have an extra battery, even the $10 Smaller Egos (the smaller ones don't come as a Twist) last between 12-48 hours, make a great backup and they are only about 3 inches long! May be good for Dad. (including the Battery and the Top holding your juice it's about 5 inches long). For your Kanger or whichever Clearo/Carto you decide to use, It's good to have two, I keep one flavor in each. That way, you also won't be spending money fruitlessly buying new cartridges whenever they inevitably burn out. Also, it's usually cheaper to ignore the "starter packs" and just buy everything seperately (the only exception being if you add a charger with your battery option) Good luck, hope that helps!

I have been vaping for 2 years and I still won't go out in public with anything other than cig-a-like sticks. Just too many people staring and thinking I am taking drugs (at least this is what I think they are thinking.) I tried before with my smallest eGo with a small tank system but I was still too self-conscious. What I do now is to use my bigger batteries and tanks at home and among friends and use cig-a-like sticks when I am out in public. It's been working great for me. Like other people has mentioned already, not all cig-a-like sticks suck. I have quite a few - the Volt from Smokeless Image, Signature from elitevaporworks and a couple Vapor4Life. Get yourself at least 2 sticks and a PCC and you should be fine for the working hours.

Well, I've been smoking cigarettes for about 8-9 years now. I got ripped off one time in the mall and bought the "Smoking Everywhere" electronic cigarette, and I thought it was horrible. The batteries wouldn't last, you couldn't refill them, their flavors were horrible, and overall, it was a gimmick targeting the new industry. I think I'm leaning towards the Ego Twist or some variation that can:

a). Hold a fair amount of liquid.
b). Have a long battery life.
c). Not look too ridiculously big.

I do construction work at the moment, and am typically seen working at banks. So, I guess I don't want something that looks like some drug paraphernalia. Anyways, my father has been smoking for 40ish years, and he keeps expressing his interest in ecigs as well. We're both roughly pack a day smokers I'd say. It seems the duty to find a safer alternative is up to me, and I'm ready to buy a decent product and give it a serious go this second time. So, before I take the plunge, I do have a few questions.

#1). Would the Ego Twist satisfy my three concerns? I'm sure about the battery life, but unsure about how much liquid it can hold. Also, roughly how large are these (a rough comparison is sufficient.) In honesty, I might break rule "c," yet I don't want something too much bigger than a black-n-mild, I suppose.

#2). Who is the best vendor in your opinion? I want someone fairly priced, good shipment, and completely trustworthy. Also, I would be interested in knowing the best vendor for the electronic cigarette and the liquids if they differ.

#3). My father is pretty dead-set on getting a flavor/vapor consistency similar to Marlboro Lights. In reality, I wouldn't mind starting with liquid that is similar in taste myself, although I believe I am more open to try others. What product/vendor do you suggest to achieve this?

#4). If I go the Ego Twist route, should I buy additional batteries or other accessories that I will most likely need anyways?

If you guys have any alternate suggestions, I am completely open. I'm going to buy my ecig and nicotine first, and try to do extra research for my father. He wants one that is similar size to a cigarette, but once he sees me changing batteries or refilling, he may understand the futility of using electronic cigarettes to completely replace an analog. I thank everyone for reading and I hope to participate in the community more.

Well, I haven't bought from My Vapor myself (yet at least) but they have a pretty solid kit here:

Spinner/Twist Combo.

It's close to what I settled on and am using now (though I went through Blu and one other kit before getting here... sigh).

For vendors, a good starting place is the Forum Supplier section. Those aren't the only reputable vendors out there but they are known to the forum and that makes for a good starting point when you're new.

(My Vapor Store is in the Forum Suppliers section by the way. I haven't dealt with them myself but that's how I know they're not some kind of "fly by night" outfit.)

The "eGo" is a style of battery. Or more technically, a threading on the battery. All these set ups have screw type threads for attaching widgets (cartomizers, clearomizers, such) and you have to watch which you get. "eGo" generally has dual threading. EGo and 510. Makes it compatible with tons of stuff out there.

The Twist (and Spinner by Vision) are just the batteries. You have to have something that actually holds the juice. In the case of the kit at My Vapor, that's the "clearomizers". I'm using the Vision 2.0 clearos on Twist batteries. Working great. If one of the Twists dies, might get a Vision Spinner to replace it. I like the Vision clearos, might as well try their batteries? :)

To start, you want two batteries and a charger. Definitely. I have 1000mAh (mAh is the battery's capacity rating). They last about six, seven hours per charge. I have one charging while using another. Got a third a while back in case one dies. Won't miss a step while getting a new one (I'm not close to a brick and mortar store, do everything online, it takes a few days to get a battery out where I am).

The Twist with a Vision 2.0 on top is a bit long but still fits in my top pocket. People often think it's a pen. :) Definitely larger than a cigarette but not bad.

Ah, yes. I remember this:

My father is pretty dead-set on getting a flavor/vapor consistency similar to Marlboro Lights...

Listen. Everybody who walks in the door (myself included) starts with "I want it to taste like a cigarette". Truth is: no, you don't.

Vaping tastes WAY better. I smoked for over thirty years (up to two packs a day) but now I can't imagine what on earth I ever saw in cigarettes. And I thought I liked smoking. Right up to the bitter end.

In fact, the end was bitter. I smoked some for a while after starting vaping. Toward the end, before I lost interest in cigs, I found them to be absolutely disgusting. They taste so bad.

These days, I'm buying plain nicotine liquid and flavorings. Fiddling around with different flavors. As I type this, I'm vaping a banana caramel concoction I threw together one day. Can't get enough of the stuff. Also, must order more banana flavor. And fast! :)

I have a rotation of about seven flavors set up and ready. I like to switch around. You just can't do that with cigs. They're the same taste. Over. And over. And over. And over...

Sounds boring as hell now.
