Ok guys I'm thinking of purchasing my first mod but I'm a little confused to say the least so hoping you guys can help me. First off I should probably mention that I know almost nothing about mods or e cigs in general so apologies in advance.

Say for example I was to purchase a Foggatti or AC9 atomiser then attach it to a variable wattage device...would this enable me to adjust the watts without worrying about the ohms? Also do variable devices generally have a built in safety or is this model specific? Will I need to adjust the watts or ohms when the battery is running low? How does this compare with a standard mechanical mod?

Also is there anything else I need to be aware of with regards to mods and hybrids in general?

Take some time to read the threads here about the many fine APVs people are liking. Yes, APVs have safety features. If you buy a VW device it's going to be VV/VW, so you get VV (or VW) for free. VV and VV/VW APVs have excellent voltage regulation and provide a steady power supply to the atomizer until the battery reaches a certain point (a little above 3.0V) when the low battery indicator goes off and the APV stops firing.

A lot of the better vendor sites offer detailed information about their APVs. Here are some examples for one of the better APVs.

Sigelei ZMAX V3- Black chrome - 101 Vape

Authentic Sigelei Zmax V3 Flat Top Telescope- Body Only

The manufacturer's sites can be helpful, too.

Zmax V3 Flat Top_ZMAX_SIGELEI Electronic Cigarette -

One factor that has a huge affect on the suitability of any APV for a user is the size and form factor. Most vendors don't offer size information (can be done with a ruler or calipers) regarding their APVs but you can often find this info at these forums. If you find a particular APV that you are interested in don't be afraid at ask questions at these threads. You will get good information from people who actually use the particular device.

Follow Yzer's good advice on the mod. :)

But the topper? Since you say you know "almost nothing", I wouldn't recommend starting with a rebuildable atomizer. Start simple. Think along the lines of any of several clearomizers, maybe a ProTank2, Davide Glassomizer, or the like. You can still replace the heads (or recoil and rewick them) when they gunk up, but maybe get your feet thoroughly wet before delving into the more "advanced" aspects of vaping.

I.e. get a firm grip on what works well for you first.
