Morning all. Dee, so glad you're finally feeling better! Mother Hen says take it easy the next day or 2 so you don't go backwards 
Verm, my motherboard is ok to use different sizes of ram as long as each channel matches. At least that's what my mb manual says I'm quite certain that either the voltages were not matching, or the the timings were different. If I had income coming in, I'd replace all 4 sticks, but for now I'm just gonna return these and put the upgrade on hold.
Mine is home built as well, but that was 7 years ago

Mines a store bought last yr. Bo. Of coarse I've added every thing I could but even with 8g I run out so I assigned both hdds and the ssd to pick up the slack. Thad workstation video card is what helped it the most.
But my other one isn't a quarter the pc but it does most of the grunt work.
Is Half Moon driving home today? Hope he makes it safe and sound, or stays put if the roads are too bad!

Folding takes up a lot too when added into the mix. I had a breakfast platter from Jack-n-t-Box this AM.

Bov, he's home, bout an half hour ago. He went to the college I told you all about for an overnight and an interview for a full ride scholarship. Its sounds like it could not have gone better all the way around. He is well pleased not only with his performance at the interview but with the school facilities and the staff and students he met. He even had a physics prof who was from our town as one of the interviewers . The interview was allotted 5 or 6 min. and a knock on the door when times up. He said he was still talking when the knock came and the 2 guys said, never mind that continue, he got an extra 5 min with them. He said when he was finished and went out the guide said "Well look at the over achiever, you're in."
Well, needless to say I'm very proud - There were about 120 there, 5 to give out, won't know anything till some time next month, send us your mojo please.
