It's a pretty short story. My fancy Italian shoes with thick rubber soles were about 15 years old. Apparently that old Italian rubber has something in it that degrades over time. One of them exploded while I was walking from the parking lot into the Seattle Ballet one night. I felt something funny & looked down to see the bottom of the shoe gone. Then chunks of the other shoe began shooting off to the sides, almost impaling a street musician ...
I had to change into the only other shoes in my car, which were either old crocs or old Birkenstocks...I can't remember which - but I felt like everyone was mocking me for the entire evening. Perhaps it was just because my dear sister was pointing it all out...
sigh.
That is why I always have to carry spare shoes in the Jeep.
It's now a law I believe.
And, I still find little chunks of shoe in my car everytime I vacuum it.

Your going to think I'm B.S,ing you TeTa, but I went to a funeral not too long ago and was wearing a fine pair of Bush-Nunn shoes, On the way to the funeral we were in my wifes car and she was driving. I asked her what that black stuff was all over her floormat and she said she didn't know ... that I must have stepped in something on my way to the car.

We got out and as we walked to the chapel the remainder of the soles came off just like your describing!!! They were completely gone. I still can't understand why that happened.

TT

See! It's not just me!
I actually did some research after it happened to prove to my sister that I was NOT the spawn of Satan that she claimed I was after this happened.
There really is a problem with some of the European rubber used for shoes - and there is a warning on ebay for sellers to twist & bang the shoes they sell before mailing them, to be sure they're not going to burst while in shipment!
Yikes!
I'll only buy shoes made in China now.
Good thing that's all there is anymore...
