"This Date In History" Game

Rather simple game really... use any source you like to find famous/infamous events that happened on today's date (the current day you are posting) in history.

Can be just about anything really that can be verified on the internet: events, births, deaths, etc...

Your post should include the historical date (today's date of a previous year), then describe the event, and if you can post a link to a website detailing the event (not required but will make it fun). Try to be creative in your sources for events.

Please do not post more than one event per post and do not make more than one post in a row. Let's let everyone else have a chance to post an interesting historical tidbit.

April 5th 1955: Churchill retires

Sir Winston Churchill retires as British prime minister. A daring soldier and reporter in the Boer War of 1899 to 1902, Churchill subsequently held a number of high ranking government posts during the 1910’s and 1920’s. His political career went somewhat into obscurity during the 1930’s, though during this time Churchill was one of the few British politicians to recognise, from an early date, the threat that the rise of Nazism in Germany posed to Europe.
