I know folks are gonna think I'm crazy, but my spider was a love. She was a Chilean Rose Tarantula that we rescued from a friend's irresponsible, teenage son.
Just a beautiful and fascinating animal. Lived to the age of approx 17 and died from complications of a particularly bad molt. Used to call her spider kitty. Still miss her.

I LOVE all spiders but fiddle backs (brown recluse) even black widows get a pass (they do get moved though). I had a friend whose nephew and his mom lived with her that had a Rose, beautiful creature. They liked her okay in her terrarium but I was the only one who would hold her. She was a sweetie, I should have stuffed her in my shirt and run off with her though. I kept saying she needed a humid terrarium and they kept saying, "No, tarantulas are dessert spiders, she needs it very dry!" A bad molt got her too as it wasn't humid enough here in the high plains dessert of Colorado...:(

I have secretly always wanted a huge jumping spider from the Amazon I could have on a leash. I love jumping spiders and wish I could keep them on my plants but our cats would eat them

Poor DaBucs kitty. Hope he feels better soon. Your daughter is a doll.

Sue is our official cat lady unless someone can top 5.

Join me in the terrified of spiders category. They bite. So do dogs but they will likely give you a warning. I got a bad infection from a spider bite a long time ago that took several months to get over. They always did frighten me though.

Sue and I are tied!

As I type I have just gotten home from teaching and of course that means PAAAARTAAAAY!!!!! in catdom.

You're not alone. Several of our friends felt the same way.
In truth, tarantulas are beautiful and gentle beasties. The Chilean Rose is one of the gentlest in temperament. They are not cuddle pets, but are aware of who takes care of them and will respond accordingly.
Spiders of all species are wonderful for controlling less desirable insect pests. Oh, and arachnids are not considered insects.

I had a pink toed tarantula at one point, it was a really cool pet but man it could jump. One cool little creature.

I knew there was a hidden reason I liked you!
And you are absolutely right; they do require a humid environment - especially when they're molting. Ours did have a large, climate controlled terrarium.
Recluses and black widows are pretty, but bad business. You don't want to be bitten by a recluse. But if you leave them alone, they'll generally leave you alone.
As much as I love 'em, the only reason we had our Rose was as a rescue. My personal opinion is that tarantulas belong in the wild. It's unfair to have an animal like that as a pet (though I'm not sure she'd have lived 17 years in the wild).

Cockatoos are cool feather people! I've known a couple of them that lived with friends.

Cool!
After we adopted ours, I found out how much there was to learn about keeping them. It's not difficult, but a lot of info to know.
