Thoughts on my RM2 build?

So, when I got my REO yesterday, my building experience was ultra minimal, meaning I had read plenty but put the information to use basically not at all. This is the third coil I've installed in my RM2, not because the first two were bad or didn't work, just for practice and out of excitement and boredom. It's a satisfying vape in my opinion and I haven't had a single dry hit. Also, I get at least 7-8 good hits between squonks. Once I get that many in I squonk out of fear of a burnt of dry hit, but it hasn't happened yet.

Here's a pic:

8 wraps of 30ga A1 around a 2mm drill hit landed at 1.85ohms. Not sure how my wicking style compares to most people's or what's preferred. Just looking for some opinions since I'm new at this.

Thanks in advance fellow reonauts! :vapor:

Edit: that's the closest pic I can get on my phone without it autofocusing on something else and blurring out the RM2 deck, so sorry.

If you're going to try other things out try an ugly coil. They have spacing between the wires and gives more bang. Only suggestion on your build is maybe a little less wick. looks good though

Follow Rays lead. He is on point. Cut your wick tips back to about half. Less is more!!

Looks like she'd give a very satisfying vape. Nicely done.

Yup - maybe back off on the wicking (shorter tails, less volume). Also, for positioning, you want it as close to the air hole as possible - close to the outer edge, right in front of the hole, same height as the hole.

You'll be a pro in no time - every one of us went through this learning curve.

Vape on.

Pretty nice looking coil. I agree with everyone who mentioned trimming the wick back, and with Papa L about moving the whole thing out closer to the rim of the atty. Practice, practice, practice.....isn't it fun? I'm really glad wire is so cheap. When I first started wrapping coils, I think I changed out perfectly good coils two or three times a day. Now I have coils in some of my REOs that have been there for 2+ months and still going strong.

I have a very long left cotton tail wrapped around the left post and back to underneath the coil. The right cotton tail is shorter but fills up some of the rest of the ceramic. The left side of the coil is overlapping the left side of the hole just a little. I think this was a 1.02 ohm with 28G kanthal and 7 wraps? I can get 15 or more good hits per healthy squonk.

This build in the pic below gives me more hits per squonk. Fasttech's 1.5 ohm premade coil and I'm using a thicker strip of cotton than I was before. It's an ugly looking build but it's hoarding a lot of juice, hence giving me a lot of hits before I need to squonk. The hole is not obstructed, the cotton is well above it.

When I got my first Reo about 3 weeks ago, I was using short cotton tails and not getting more than 4 or 5 hits per squonk. To the OP I'd just say try building a cotton cloud around and under the coil that doesn't obstruct the hole and see what you get.

Thanks everybody! I will use a shorter wick and pull the coil out a bit more next time I rebuild. Might not be for a while unless I get bored cause I'm very pleased with the way this one is vaping. Also I use unflavored juice so my wick is bound to last a decent bit.

Edit: thewomenfolk, I will try your suggestion as well and see how it works out. Thanks.

This video by super_X is about the Odin but the coil building and placement tutorial will help with just about any atty you will run into. The principles are the same, only the execution may be a little different.

While your checking that one out, go ahead and subscribe to his channel for a masters degree in REOs, RM2s and building micro coils.

Welp, I decided to build for no reason other than to build. This is what this one looks like before priming. Another 30ga 8 wrap, this one at 1.82 ohm. I just really like the way coils of this resistance vape out of the RM2.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1407637438.899510.jpg

This time I tried to get it closer to the edge and line it up height wise with the RM2 air hole. I guess I should have taken a picture from the side to show the height...whoops. Flavor is the same since I vape unflavored mostly but it's still a nice consistent satisfying vape. I wish I had like 9 RM2s so I could build a variety of coils and compare them side by side, hahaha. I also trimmed the wicks down a bit more like everybody said. Yet to try the super wick suggested earlier covering most of the deck except the drain, but I will when I re wick it next.

I looked around for ugly coil details and pics and threads but actually couldn't find much. One thread, the the pics didn't work. But i figured I knew they were non contact coils so I just didn't pinch and torch em. While I had it wrapped on my bit I just used my nail file on my clippers to even out the spacing a little before setting the coil.

Would there be any benefit to using 26ga and adding wraps to get up to my desired resistance range? I feel like there would just be too much coil and you have a lot more room for dry spots and whatnot. Plus it would take longer to heat and cool which I think is a huge disadvantage with a REO, considering you already have to give it a couple seconds here and there to cool before squonking.

When I first started out making coils I would use a screw to make a uniform and nicely spaced coil to vape... It helped eliminate any problems with hot spots. Can't remember what size screw it was though...

Yep me too. Here's one of my first :)
