To be honest I have never been particularly satisfied with the standard DSE801's at standard voltage, and yes I found they did not give a strong throat hit. I wouldn't say zero, so perhaps you have a sub par example. For throat hit I've always found the 510, and even DSE901 style e-cigs better. I was for a while using a lot of DSE801's at 5v and they really come to life at that power, and hit hard, although I was finding they didn't last long. The e-liquid used is of course the other factor. Pre-filled cartridges are rarely very good, so maybe have a look at that. Its normal for e-cigs to crackle, hiss etcetera and some are louder than others. I always find it reassuring as it means it's working well..

Personally, in the penstyle range I prefer the Joye 302 atomisers. They have a lower resistance as standard (around 3 ohms) and therefore run a bit hotter. They also seem better built, and I have yet to have one fail completely even at 5v. I've read that the Best E-cig BE112 atomisers are also highly regarded but haven't tried them myself.
