i am very new to vaping and had a few concerns. my main reason for wanting to stop smoking is because i'm a singer and cigarettes have started to do damage to my voice. i've only been vaping for a few days, and tonight i took a drag and began coughing profusely. i read online that e-cigarettes can cause throat irritation, and also that withdrawing from analog cigarettes can cause excessive coughing as well. i guess my question to you all is how badly do e-cigarettes affect your throat and breath control?

When I switched from analogs to vaping I suffered from coughing spells for a week or two. However I noticed increased lung capacity and breathing control. I am a technical SCUBA diving instructor and lung capacity and breath control is very important and was a major reason for my switch. The ecigarette has help dramaticly in this department. What you are feeling is most likely what is called throat hit, you can make this less pronounced by vaping a lower nic level juice. Also if it is truly a throat irritation that lasts after you are done vaping it could be an allergic reaction to Propolyne Glycol (PG) the base for many ejuices. You may try switching to a Vegtable Glycerine (VG) bassed ejuice. A few people are allergic to the PG but I haven't herd of many allergic reactions to VG.

ditto on the singing - I had a sore throat and irritated mouth for about a week, and the cough.... It wasn't intolerable, and it passed. I'm a month in and I can tell you -

breath control - noticeable difference. I feel and sound more in control of my tone and power.
Range - my lower register is stronger. I have more "bottom" now - and I've increased my upper register by 1/3 octive.

I have a slight "rasp" to my voice that I "thought" I was in control of (Jazz, blues, rock) - Now? I am actually in control of my tone - overall - and while I didn't want to lose the rasp (it's my voice), I just learned that I can be in control of it.

Vaping has had no negative effect on my voice. Smoking was killing my voice.

I know I'll continue to improve and "push through the wall" I thought I'd reached.

Honestly- hang in there and give it a chance. The first week or so may be rough. If you rehearse/train regularly, take it slow and go easy on your voice while you're adjusting. The coughing and soreness will go away.

Keep hydrated (which you already know as a singer) it will help while you are going through the coughing bit.

If you have a vocal coach, tell them that you quit smoking and show them your PV - they can work with you through the "coughing up yuck" and sore throat period.

You'll probably start to notice improvements within the first 2 weeks. As time goes on, you'll really start to gain momentum and be amazed :)

Good Luck! :)

thanks for the feedback, guys. i'm on day 3 of vaping right now and i'm noticing some throat irritation. haven't had an analog in 24 hours which is the longest i've gone since i started smoking again. but i'm anticipating a grueling studio session in the next month or so. i'll be laying down vocals for several hours a day. do you think it's safe to say that these effects will blow over within that time and for me to continue vaping?

If it's just mild throat irritation, are you at least warming up daily? Have you been singing with the mild sore throat? What do you notice, if anything, about your voice right now?

I think if you keep your voice in shape, you'll be better than ever in the studio for hours at a time laying down vocal tracks in a month.

Vaping didn't do anything negative to my voice. I would have had the same irritation/issues from quitting even if I wasn't vaping, so... yep, it should pass quickly and not have a negative impact on the quality of your vocals :)

They may not. Get thee to a drug store and buy USP glycerin. I use VG only juices because PG dries and irritates my throat WAY too much, plus other nasty issues. The PG "allergy" IMHO is generally that the PG irritation is a lot to some people, and to others that irritation is just throat hit sensation. I actually get my VG from Whole Foods, Heritage brand. About the same price, maybe a touch more. Its purely from veggies though, not synthetic or animal based.

Make a 80% VG, 20% distilled water (get at grocery store) liquid, no nic. Just vape that for a while. My guess is it will be very smooth and soothing, more moistening than PG. If it works, there ya go, just buy VG juices, or make your own DIY (what I do for 100% of my juices). I'm betting this will change everything for you.

Good luck!!

thanks guys. my throat is already much better (only been vaping for about 5 days.) it's just a little dry, but that's a small price to pay considering the coughing and congestion that analogs gave me is already improving.

this is a really dumb question, but how do i go about making this mixture, kurt? i'm using the smoke 51 duo brand, and over the course of a few days my e-cig went from a nice fruity taste to tasting like pure .... i'm assuming it's time for a refill?

Before I started vaping, my singing voice was so bad, I stopped trying. I've been vaping for a month or so now and it's starting to come back. As my body started getting used to vaping and not smoking, I did notice slightly more coughing. It has since died down considerably. Keep going. You will get adjusted. Just give it time. My voice is coming back and the breath control is coming back as well. :D
