Hello Modders,

I've put together a nice little 5volt 2AA box mod using the TI Booster. I've built it using two 100uf 10v caps and some nice 16 gauge wire. Hits like a champ when pushing the beefy 3A switch.

My question; when the circuit is closed (firing the atty) the mod makes a very quit but noticeable buzzing or humming noise. Is this normal?

It's not from the atty steaming the juice. I've multimetered all my solder joints and they are all solid.

Is this normal? I've been using it for 3 days now and I still have my face and fingers. (no explosions) :)

I've put the mod thru some testing buy having it continually run with a closed circuit for over 10 minutes and it was fine.

Any advice or feed back would be great. TIA for all your help with this build. And to ECF for providing a place to discuss it.

probably pushing it's limits but I don't know for sure. I remember reading another thread or two quite a while ago with the same symptom. I'm sure someone with more experience with the TI's will chime in

Thanks, I hope your right. I want too put together a few more for friends and family, but want to get this problem fixed first. Thanks again squirrel64.

Actually it is coming from the caps. As they charge and discharge they vibrate so fast it creates that buzz you hear. At least that is my experience. I mount the caps on the bottom side, and I always hear the buzzing until they are in the adhesive, which dampens the sound.
That's what I was thinking.

So the buzzing sound is normal for this setup?

It could also be battery whine. I had the ptn4050c set up on a breadboard with plenty of physical separation between components, and the buzzing noise I was getting was definitely coming from the 14500 battery itself. Replacing the 14500 IMR with an 18650 IMR solved it, so I went with that. That's my limited experience, not sure if it applies here, though.

Pushing the 12 watt limit will make it whiiiiiiiiiine.

I'm using a single AW IMR 14500 battery is it really pushing out close to 12 watts?

It also happens with the grey TrustFire 900mah batteries.

I need to take a closer look at the watts chart that was posted a few days ago. Or build another mod with an 18650 or 26650. :)

Oh yea...The 2xAA box with ptn04050C booster and 14500 is my bread and butter. I've built about 20 of them and they all whine till you glob the adhesive in there.

Thanks Dalton, I have my PTN04050CAD secured with gorilla glue. I'll try some type of non-toxic rubber cement in the next build.

What type of adhesive are you using to dampen the sound?

I have one that squeals when the battery needs charging.

I am building up one now but seem to be out of the 100uF 10v. caps.
I do have a boat load of 22uF 50v.

anybody know what effect that would cause to use them.
I have tried this chip with no caps but with these dual coils I am running now it is either not working as a booster or when it does boost it will suck the battery flat in no time. and it gets very hot when boosting.

Ummm, off the top of my head I would say it is the dual coils... The 04050C has a 2.5A limit, as well as a max of 12W output. Even if you used a 2ohm dual coil, at the"minimum" 5v, that comes to 2.5A and 12.5W. A 1.5ohm dual coil is almost 3.4A and 16.4W...

As far as the 22uF caps, I'm sure you could use them, just would be slightly less efficient that the 100's.

I should have thunked of that.
4.5volts, 1.5 ohms, 3 amps, 13.5 watts. yea that's a lot.
So I guess that over the past 2 months I just killed the chip using them, but I like um, I like um,,,,,,,
I do have a step down switching regulator mod that runs off of 7.4 v perhaps I should only use them with it.

I saw a DC-DC boost converter on ebay that supported up to 5A input, 3A out I believe.. here it is.. someone please let me know if that would work for a mod: DC-DC Converter Step-Up Converter Voltage Boost Module | eBay It looks like it would.. only thing is the minimum 4v output but that's fine for me.. I never vape below 4v anyways. Here's one that says it will do 20w under 'natural cooling' looks a bit beefy though.. 5A LM2587 DC/DC Converter Boost Power Supply Regulator | eBay

I'm looking to build a boost converter mod as well, but I usually vape above 12w.. so the ptn04050c is out.. any suggestions?

The whining is not normal. It means it's current starved. Covering it up is not the way to go. It's like having an engine knock in your car, and addressing the issue by using earplugs.

Easy enough to figure out just wire in an 18650 and see if it stops. I imagine Gummy has no whining with his.

As far as caps why not use a TI recommended one?

Here's the first one on their list.

EEU-FC1E181 Panasonic Electronic Components Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - Leaded

It's cheap and meets all TI's requirements, ESR etc.

Hello Mrengles and all!

Mrengles you mentioned a thank you for helping "with this build" - can you point me to a link where someone has a full instructions on how to build a mod box with booster chip or do I need to keep on searching thru bits and pieces on how others built it from different discussions?

Thank you in advance!
