I grew my own tobacco plants last year mainly for the fun of it, and let one go to seed.

This happened well prior to me getting into the whole vaping thing, and I had some hope of doing my own smokes. Well that's not going to happen.

In any case, I figured it might be interesting to see if I could do a flavor extraction from my own home grown and dried tobacco.

I don't have access to lab equipment and this is by no means intended to DIY nicotine, just flavor, in its natural form with no real complex drying techniques.

The tobacco itself is Kentucky 21, and grows well here in Kentucky, go figure ;-)

I'll plant 36 plants this year and see how it goes at the end of the season.

I'll keep this updated as progress goes along. But the end goal is to make a tobacco flavor. If its in the wrong area of the forum please feel free to move it.

I may have but didn't find it today.

I love your avatar by the way.

I have zero expectations for this project other than to have the experience of doing it. It'll likely be nasty as all get out, the fun is in the process for me.

Here is one plants worth of dried leaf, I think it looks cool just hanging there. So for me, its a win even if it doesn't work out.

As for how I will do it, I'll give as many method a shot as I can. Who knows one might just work out.

I was thinking of doing it canning style, which should in my very uneducated opinion act to sterilize the juice and prevent fermentation. I'm mainly worried about water getting in the mix than anything else.

I suggest storing all but a small amount of the finished extract in the freezer. Heating enough to sterilize would probably give the stuff an off taste.

I've only made one attempt at extracting tobacco flavor. I used cigarette rolling tobacco, placed it in a glass pot and added enough VG to cover it, then heated it to a simmer for 30 minutes. The result after a rather crude filtering was a very dark, thick liquid. I made several batches of juice with concentrations of 15, 20 and 25% extract. The taste while definitely tobacco was not very good.

Here's what I've learned:
-Use high quality tobacco, preferably one with few or no additives (to minimize coil gunk)
-If extracting with VG dilute it first with distilled water to about 4:1 ratio, otherwise it's very difficult to filter
-VG extracts can become moldy if stored at room temp for long periods
-Expect to steep the finished juice for at least a month for best taste

Have you learned much about curing the tobacco leaves after harvesting?
I'm curious about how different processes affect the taste.

Oh, and I have an idea for toasting/smoking a batch of tobacco, based on an accident involving a stovetop and a 3-lb can of coffee.

I tried it with some left over RYO tobacco I had and it actually worked out really good. Same taste in the vape as with the cigarette but it was a real atty killer. Would only get a day or 2 out of my coil before I had to clean or rebuild it. Maybe some extra fine filtering would have resolved it but I never looked any further into it.

The batch pictured is just cut off the plant as soon as the tips started to yellow and then strung on fishing line and dried in my basement.

Its possible to smoke cure tobacco with any number of woods if you have a smoker I suppose, I'm not sure it would be the same as doing an entire barn though.

There is quite a lot of info online about curing tobacco, its somewhat of an art I believe when you get into the more complex methods.

I wonder if putting an old record player to use as a centrifuge would help clear an extraction of solids?

I would think if better filtration than a coffee filter were needed you'd need to get spendy, micron filter mesh is pretty easy to come by but cramming PG or VG through it is another thing.

For filtration you can use some cotton balls inside a large syringe. This filters enough particles out to reduce the atty killer aspect.

I've only done extractions using cigars, and the results do taste like chomping on a cigar, alas not the smoke of a cigar. And yes I smoked cigars when possible, as in not around women or other living things or suffered the complaints. For some reason, not everyone likes the aroma of a good cigar...:vapor:

I have some fertile plots sitting idle -- and it's spring time. Would be interested in trying some varieties of tobacco plants. Anyone recommendations on seeds to buy and where? I'm in Texas and have water collection system.

You can buy seeds from Seedman's, the same place where I get some of my flavors.

That's funny. When I was in college the math department used to have "Cigar Aficionado" parties. I always got invited because [reasons], but the condition was that I had to smoke at least one cigar while I was there. After the first time, I did learn to bring cigarillos. That led to some consternation but was eventually accepted.

It was a lot of fun and no of course I never complained about the aroma :D

How does it smell and taste?

I steeped tobacco in PG for a few weeks and I liked the vapor taste. I vaped it quite a bit. I need to see if I have any left.
