What year was the official first available vape device launched, for sale to the public?
Probably was a cigalike. The first "mods" were homemade battery holders (ie flashlights) or metal tubes with a fire button and 510 connector.

One of the first mass produced mods was the AltSmoke Silver Bullet, circa 2009. It was one of the first to use an 18650 battery. Earlier mods used smaller batteries.

Grimm Green mentioned the Protege (14500 battery by Puresmoker) and the Screwdriver in the above videos.

Puresmoker was involved in the first lawsuit filed against a mod manufacturer when a battery exploded in a user's face. Puresmoker went out of business soon after.

I remember the silver bullet. I really wanted one. It's funny when GrimmGreen read the battery. "This is uh an 18... 6... 50, yeah" Those batteries were not common. They are the norm now.

Exactly. I remember when I got my new Silver Bullet, the only choices of 18650 batteries were made by Trustfire, Surefire, and Ultra Fire. In hindsight, those were terrible protected ICR batteries. AW had a black protected ICR battery which was better than the 'fire" brands. Those were the only 18650 batteries that I used. I used a 14500 Trustfire battery in my black AltSmoke BB which exploded. Today, everyone says, "Don't use a battery with fire in the name."

Sometime later in 2012, AW came out with their iconic red unprotected IMR battery. Although advertised as a high drain, safer chemistry battery, folks on You Tube warned not to use an unprotected battery in a mod. Over time, folks became better educated and discovered that the new high drain, unprotected and safer chemistry IMR's were the best choice to use.

ECF's @rolygate was the Battery Mooch back in the day. He is the individual who promoted the use of the red AW IMR battery as the safest battery available. Rechargeable Batteries -- by Rolygate

That's what I started with, with a 650mAh eGo battery powerin' it. 4 years and a couple months later I still use one of a couple clearo's that I still have (an Innokin iClear X.I and an Ehpro eTank S2) occasionally, but mostly one of three RTA's (2 Serpent's and a Gotank) on one of two regs (a Provari and an iStick) or a mech (a Sir Lancelot).

I saw Matt(SuckMyMod) drop an Aegis and the battery lock fell off. But yes, I bought my brother the Paranormal and it's solid. It's very comfortable too. The Reo Grand was the first squonker. I have a mini version. Squonking was invented back them(2010-2011) a lot of people think it is new.

But the Dicodes seem nice. I want to get myself a Dani Box soon.

    This is the Reo Grand

I think the only thing "new" about squonking is the name  Back in the Reo Grand days it was simply "bottom feeder". Not sure which term I like better  I am having a tough time breaking the use of "bottom feeder" ;)

    Who came up with squonking
Squonking - Where did that term come from ?
While squonking may seem like something new, it can be traced back to 2009 as a DIY project by a member of the E-Cigarette Forum. The project prompted a discussion on YouTube. Dubbed the JuiceBox, Carlos49 wasn't able to replicate the device commercially, and this model didn't take off, but vapers wanted to get their hands on this device. The JuiceBox paved the way for what is considered the first successful commercial squonk mod, the REO.

The REO was created by another member (Robert E. O'Neil) of E-Cigarette Forum in 2010 and quickly fueled the desire for more squonk mods. These devices are still popular today for their durability and fine craftsmanship

I had this when I finally gave up tobacco for good.
I had been using cartos powered by the most disparage solutions, but this was really good.
And, for strange it may seems, it is still going strong at six years mark...

I've got one also and it still does the job. I carry it as a battery bank tho it's still capable of providing a great vape with my Aspire clearos and Eleaf GS Air tanks.

That was a really cool video. That's a newer Reo.

Well.....back in the day, all I ever heard was bottom feeder :laugh: When I came back onto ECF after a long hiatus, that was the first I saw "squonk mod" in relation to the device (and not the action of squeezing the bottle ;) ) and had to go see what this new fangled contraption was...never even crossed my mind to put that term with the bottom feeders :lol: I don't recall a menu option at any of the vendors that called them squonks/squonk mods.

I guess my first installment here should not be about the gear I used the first 1.5 years, but rather the gear that I did 3+ years of my vaping with. I got the first of my 35 Reos in Aug 2014. I still prefer to squonk, but started to make the switch to regulated squonk mods and mesh RDA's in Aug 2017. Anyway, for the oldest Reos.....

Picture's of Robert's (the Reosmods Master) first mods and first squonk mod c 2009, followed by the first Reo to go out to a beta customer made from wood late 2009/early 2010 ? (the door button pushes the internal bottle to squonk it... a basic design for wood Reos that he continued to make until early 2011 IIRC). Also the prototype VV Wood Reo from 1/2012.

I probably should have started the squonk mods with the first squonk mod of them all, the Juice Box from Carlos, Casselberry, Florida. It was not commercially successful, the Reo will always hold that title. But it was pre Reo. Supposedly the internal atty of the Juice Box was problematic, had to be returned for repair and production/turn-around was slow. But it was pre Reo.

Another oldie but goodie Reo was the single run of Nickel Mini's c 6/2010.

My oldest Reos are a 2/2011 Blue Anodized Mini (now running a Hornet), and an early 2012 small button OGVV Reo (running an IGO-S). Both are still in pristine condition.

The Janty Stick black leather belt holster works perfect for protecting this mini and all my other Reo 1.0's.

I felt like I hit the big time when I upgraded to the Lavatube!

I hear ya @mattymatt82. The Lavatube was my first upgrade to an 18650 device after my previous upgrade to a couple of eGo Twist's. Got a couple of pretty dicey batts in blue wrappers and a cheap charger in the kit too. A little while later I switched to mech mods which at the time made me a cloud chaser , but reliability and my vape experience greatly improved :)

Ah, the good old days

Man, we have it good these days!
