There are three main possibilities as I see it...
1 -You do, indeed, have short in your coil to the mesh. The fact that you are getting the tails to glow indicates that there is no short elsewhere in the Nova.
2 - You are using wire that is too thin. Thinner wire will glow more easily when not touching anything.
3 - Your tails are too long. The fact is, naked single wires will glow and give you a hot spot every time. I have not attempted to rebuild a Nova yet so I don't know the challenges first hand but I do know that tails not wrapped around something will be the first thing to glow because they have nothing to heat up but themselves.

Thanks will triple check my stuff. It seems rather easy I see newbies doin it, I'm just failing bad somewhere. Perhaps its due to the U wick vs an easy standard genny wick
