After a night of insomnia and reading TONS of new members' threads of confusions on where to start out when they're overwhelmed by the options out there I wrote out a list of phases we all seem to go through that just may save a lot of you with questions a lot of time and money on where to start out with hardware. After posting this I continued going through thread after thread that I could easily copy/paste the same message into so I just decided to start a new thread.

Here's a copy/paste of that post:
_______________________________________________

Welcome to vaping!

You'll probably notice after you've read enough threads that the progression usually looks something like this:

1. "I started with a blu/volcano/ripoff mall kiosk trap" >

2. "didn't do it for me so I upgraded to a 510." Some stop here but most move on. >

3. "after a couple weeks the 510 felt lacking TH, battery life, flavor, etc. So I upgraded to a Riva/eGo." This seems to be the sweet spot many settle into and remain. Likely the closest you're going to get to an analog and remain convenient as a 2-3 piece unit and has the option of LR attys for a little extra kick. Then there are others...>

4. "realized I wanted to blow huge plumes of vapor into my pet's face and wanted something handy to blind security cameras and expose laser trip wires at the bank/museum/secret government agency I intend to infiltrate. I love my big battery mod!" These are the guys with lights in their pcs and superchargers on their electric razors. If you're in this category you're not reading this in the first place, you're busy soldering a car battery to a 510 battery connector and figuring out how to mount it to your beer can helmet filled with 100% VG.

The point is.. most seem to stop at the Riva/eGo phase and are perfectly content. Problem is when a Riva can be had for $30 with two batteries, two atomizers and the charger but phase 1 and 2 are usually $50+ I always push people to START there if I can get word to them before making their initial purchase. I've never seen anyone complain the Riva is too big, especially when it's really only slightly bigger than a 510, still much smaller than a pack of smokes, but has 3-4x the battery capacity and gives you the LR atty option. Also keep in mind the Riva hits identical to the 510 on regular 510 attys, it just lasts a hell of a lot longer. I say "Riva" over "eGo" as it's half the price with a slightly higher capacity battery. I just wish someone had filled me in on this specific info before I went through phase 1 and 2 myself but buying for 2 people so spending over $300. Actually I went through phase 1 twice cause I ordered a blu but couldn't wait when it took a month to show up and ordered 2 Volcanos, so I'm actually over $400.

Rereading what I've typed here I should just copy/paste this into a new newbie thread and push to have it stickied. Noone wants to say your starter pack sucks cause I've met nothing but the coolest bunch of people in the world here on the ECF and they're all proud that you've learned to smoke correctly and want you in the community. Mom's not exactly going to tell you your macaroni and Elmer's glue picture looks like ..., she's just happy you're not eating the glue anymore.

TLDR= If you're considering putting more $$ into extra batteries and attys but aren't sure of the 510's performance, the Riva is a no-brainer @ $30 for two more batteries and 2 more attys + another charger.

___________________________________

Now I don't claim to be an expert at anything, I just want to give a no-nonsense bit of guidance to someone overwhelmed with the options out there. Everyone has their favorite PV they're going to sell you on but few will say the Riva/eGo is garbage especially at a price that beats many low end kits. Just make sure to click the 20% off at LF before you add items to your cart. Then you'll just need juice and Madvapes' TopVapor is a good place to start there as the prices beat many others to keep your experimentation phase costs to a minimum.

If many of the other experienced vapors agree with this maybe we could go the sticky route?

Good luck and welcome to vaping!:vapor:

Amen awesome post. My best friend ignored my advice and ordered an ecig that she found under google search of "best ecigs" or "best ecig reviews" and i CRINGED when i researched this ecig. She paid 3 times what my eGo cost me, and waited a MONTH for her shipment. 3 days of vaping this ecig, she called me and said "i want what you have". yesterday she gave me the money and told me to just DO the ordering for her. i bought her a Joye eGo with mega cartridges and mega atomizer from Liberty Flights. and i am now in the process of ordering her a bunch of juices from Backwoods Brew. and yes i know the RIVA was less but she wanted a color it wasnt available in. i got the whole starter kit, with an ECF discount for under $60 (with the mega size carts/atty included)!!!

LOL. I'll be outside fixing up my car battery.

I guess I was different I went from 510 a year ago to full out Mods (home made). My advice would be to skip the eGo and go for the gold.

Just kidding (kinda) I think the eGo or eGo clones are perfect for people who don't like to tinker or spend $150 on a high end mod.

I'm with Riverwolf, I started with a KR808d-1 last Feb and its worked well for me. This past month I decided to go for more battery life and bigger cartomizers and bought a pigcig from LeCig and also got a GoGo kit from Nhaler. I'm filling my own soft cap carto's and I'm pretty happy with where I am.

I know nothing about the Riva/Ego or 510, but I am curious about dripping. I may still end up with one of the aforementioned products but not because I've been disappointed in what I've gotten so far.

So for those who are using cartomizers and started with an 808 -- there may be a progression for them as well.

Good point.

Low Resistance is also another factor, but please keep in mind that the switches on the eGo and Riva etc. Are Mosfet switches that are NOT rated for the extra power drain. Many people have had luck with them but Many Many people have killed their eGo/clones switches using them.

I have a few friends that I wish would have just handed me the money too. But keep in mind some people want to be in control of their addiction, that's part of them getting a handle on things. I'm glad your friend was finally able to trust you enough so that you could help out.

Happy Vaping.

yes aint it awesome that she now trusts me about this vaping business? our christmas day after supper consisted of comparing her V2 901 to my eGo (with mega cart/atty) and also tried about a dozen juices i bought her, by using my drip tip. she was SOLD! so i am having lots of fun right now picking out flavors from Backwoods Brew and Ms T's Bakery with HER money. I just called her and told her that the eGo with mega stuff is already ordered as of today! woohoo!!!
oh and get this! i think i created a VAPING MONSTER! i told her about DIY. and she's all about being thrifty and is VERY crafty and into cooking/baking etc...and she wanted to know ALL about DIY'ing..i just said, go to the forum, cant help ya there, i am lazy, i just buy premixed.

Well Texas, you may profit from her DIY interest - not a bad deal... I'm telling my friends all about this, many don't smoke themselves but they have friends and children who do. Most of my co-worker smoke and are begging me to explain it all. I tell them that they are lucky because I'm getting a doctorate in vapology and they will really benefit from my knowledge - at least I can help them skip a couple of steps. I put website addresses in their hands but they don't go. What I find is that I have to put it in their mouths! Talk is cheap, it's a whole different story when they get a good hit!

Great post, just step back a think when recommending an ego /riva to an ultra light
smoker. Someone asking for advice because they "smoke a pack a week of ultra-lites and
let most of them burn out in the ashtray"
An ego with 24mg juice may be somewhat
overkill for them.:)

.....but that car battery and 510 battery connector sounds interesting....hmmm

Car batteries are so yesterday: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/freedom-smoke-usa/140218-ultimate-mod-fsusa-juice.html

LOL! I'm in trouble! I already have a cigarette lighter adapter wired into my motorcycle battery so I can recharge my e-reader (or anything else with a USB plug). Maybe that explains my lust for a bottom feeding box mod??

Great job!!!
