I presume it acts like a tensioning band and reinforcement for the plastic material. By removing it before pulling it apart it would allow the plastic tube material to give a little and ease the removal of the inner guts. Of course you can see where this is going. lol

I can see this. By having no Band the Tube can Flex Slightly.

LOL

That's Funny because that is what I tried to do when I First got my Stardust.

BTW - Think how Cool it would be If the Tube just Screwed Onto the Base and the OEM Sold Replacement Coil/Wick Assemblies.

They've got something in mind. The manufacturer's web site mentions something about "Replaceable" coming soon.

Did you cover the grips with masking tape? That seems to be important.

The tape is to let the Pliers Grip the Smooth Metal Band. I used a Wide Rubber Band wrapped around the Band.

But just about anything Rubbery that grips Metal could work. You could also try putting Electrical Tape on the Band and Nothing on the Pliers.

If you recall though, I didn't get the tube off completly that way. After a Small Gap Formed at the Band, I tried to pry it off with a Razor Blade. That is when I sliced open My Finger and Decided I was doinfg something wrong.

RR - Great vid again! Question for ya. When you pull the ring off can you see any hairline fractures or cracks at the very end of the plastic tube? Also I don't have sound so you might have mentioned this in your vid but what version is this you're taking apart? The second release Ver?

Ant - Hammers are what love is all about! If it can't be fixed with duct tape and a hammer it can't be fixed! ;)

I hadn't mentioned specifically in the release but I've definitely been able to pull apart the second version Stardusts (several of them). I haven't noticed hairline fractures but I've been pretty gentle in rocking them off. But, then again, I have bad eyesight and wasn't looking for it!

BTW - Has anyone gotten out the Dremel yet and cut the Tube down?

Without the Band and With a Shorter Tube there would be No Need for a 510 to 510 Extender on a Provari or Lavatube.

Right?

I thought about that after my wifes snapped along the top edge of the metal sleeve. After looking at it I'm thinking you would be knocking it off all the time for lack of a solid base connection. The metal band is needed I think to keep the plastic from breaking if bumped.

I'll wait for you to post some pics and tell us how it's workin. :D :pop:

Edit: Thanks for the feed back RR. All mine have visible cracks so I know that as soon as I apply any pressure to them with pliers they'll crack even worse. :( I guess I'll have to wait until they sell just the tubes and hope I get some with no cracks before I can try this new technique.

I see no cracks on the end of the tube on the one I took apart. Interesting isn't it. I have one large crack that starts right at the edge of the lip.

Hammers, duct tape and a Swiss Army knife, my all-time favorite MacGyver tools.
