I’ve tried some tobacco e-liquid from various suppliers and some are good but others have an odd background flavor that I can’t quite explain. It isn’t a strong overpowering flavor but it absolutely ruins the wick in my BCC for vaping anything after. An open bottle will permeate a small room with this scent/stink. I don’t like it at all; it almost makes me sick. Halo Tribeca, Turkish and Torque all have this obnoxious ingredient. So does Plume Room’s Honey Fig Tobacco Blend and a couple of my local B&M outlet’s blends.

The tobacco flavors I’ve tried that do not contain this mysterious substance are Alpaca, Wild Horse and Nutty Tobacco all from Vapolife.com

I’m just getting into DIY juices and I want to know what this is so I can avoid flavorings that have it. Any idea what it is?

One ingredient that I have used that can be rather tricky is Type M from TFA, it can work well in very small %'s and with a long steep. Too high % or no steeping can be rather unpleasant. The concentrate is rather strong smelling.

I doubt that it is the one you have had experience with, but just a heads up. I like it, but you really need to use care if you use it.

Thanks to all of you that tried to help. My description is so vague but I just couldn't do any better. RoseB I think you've nailed it best. Dirty Socks is the best comparison to what I'm tasting/smelling. Maybe even a wet dog. I wish I could describe it better but I can't. It's a mellow flavor that is in the background behind the main flavor. It doesn't taste anything like tobacco. It's in the foreground of the smell, if that makes sense. It just doesn't belong in an e-juice that is named as tobacco. It isn't in any non-tobacco flavor I've tried. I'm new at vaping and didn't know anything about steeping so I just gave the juice away.

I'm starting to make my own liquid and I want to avoid buying a lot of bottles of flavorings that I won't like. Unfortunately none of the flavorings are advertised as having a hint of Dirty Socks.

The Halo base has that taste I believe you are tasting. I don't find it that offensive, but everyone's tastes are subjective. Kind of a metallic vanilla ashy taste, right? Almost ry4, ry4 tastes ok to me, but not all by itself. Mix it up as a secondary flavor under Mild Black and its great.
