PennyLynn, have you tried VG-only juices? I really think what you are describing is the
very common PG effect of chemical drying. I personally cannot have more than a few % PG in my juices (from flavors only, I never add PG), otherwise it will dry me out something terrible. I know it is PG because it will start with dry mouth and chapped lips, with water helping only for a minute or so.
Before making huge changes to your diet and vitamin intake, just try some VG-only juices. Or DIY them yourself. My recipe is this:
%flavor + %water(distilled) = ~22%.
The rest is VG and nic. Most flavors are primarily PG, so if the base is being given as 30:70 PG:VG, but it uses 20% flavor, then the PG content is probably much higher than 30%.
Fact: you do NOT need PG to have a good
vape. Water will open up flavors like PG does. Yes, PG does give a TH, but it is a
throat irritation TH. I prefer my TH to be from nic alone, that way I know from the hit if the nic is right.
In the beginning, before we knew much about the effects of PG on many people, I was told "drink lots of water!". Did not help. I was told go for a 20:80 PG:VG mix, that will do it! It didn't. It was only after I started DIYing and making my own VG juices that I saaw
clearly that
any PG higher than about 5% (from flavoring) would dry me out, or worse (PG causes gastric problems for me too).
Now, while I certainly do drink a fair amount of water, I do not NEED to. I rarely have dry mouth or the other nasty things that PG did to me. To be honest, most of the time I am
vaping unflavored VG liquids with 20% water, and MAYBE a few % flavoring. My point is that even if you go VG-only from a vendor, if they are flavoring at 20%, you are still probably getting a fair amount of PG.
I recommend starting with an unflavored VG-nic at the nic level you like, and see if the problem goes away. I am betting it does. If it does not go away when you have removed PG entirely, then try the other alternatives you mention. Some drugs can produce dry mouth too, and yes some vitamin deficiencies (like C) can do this. But it really does sound like the typical PG aversion. Note: this is NOT an allergy! People say this without knowing what an allergy is. IF you are getting hives or rose blotches with PG, then this could be an allergy. Simple dryness is just a chemical effect. One would not say they are allergic to hydrochloric acid if it gave them blisters.
Feel free to PM me. I'm not a medical doctor, so I don't want to discourage you from getting medical analysis if the problem does not solve itself. But I am a PhD chemist, deeply involved in the chemistry of vaping (consultant for AEMSA).
Good luck!
