just found this site and it is a great help. still not sure what is what but am learning. I'm thinking of starting with a dura c and or a screwdriver. I'm trying to quit analogs and think this is a good way to do it. are there any retail stores that sell these or is it pretty much online. I'm in Sacramento ca. also is there any groups that meet in my area? I can see this could get addicting as I am somewhat of a collector of stuff.

I am pretty new to E-cigs my self but i will tell you that a REALLY like my 801 penstyle. I have only tried the smoking everywhere and the penstyle. Most newbees are worried about upfrount $$$ and the penstyle is a verry good start you can finf them from about $29 - $60 bux It has a really easy draw and LOTS a vapor

STAY AWAY FROM SMOKING EVERYWHERE!!! Over priced and poor quality. Your idea of a Dura C or a Screwdriver is on the mark. Both are manual switch PV's (personal vaporizers) which provide better performnace with less problems such as liquid getting into the battery compartment and gumming up the auto switch in PV's like the 901 or 801. The main difference between the Dura C/510 and the Screwdriver, Prodigy, GG or Janty Stick is the length of the battery charge and the cost of the batteries. With the bigger batteries such as the Screwdriver, you get 6-8 hours of battery life between charges instead of 2-3 with the Dura. Plus the batteries only cost $2 instead of $15. I would also suggest getting liquid instead of using prefilled carts. The taste is better, more variety and more cost effective.

Sounds like you have done some good research, those two choices are great. I do not know of any retail stores in our areas, so you should order on line. Dont forget to get some empty cartridges and liquid so you can refill carts. Also, a usb for the dura will help out should you experience the dreaded small tube battery problems. That way you will be able to vape while waiting for batteries if you are not stocked up enough. Also something to consider is that the cartridges and atomizers on the 901 are interchangeable with the Screwdriver. But I do believe that the Dura-C is alot better device with the manual battery than the 901. I so love the Screwdriver for its handcrafted beauty. It really is a piece of art and very well made. Very reliable too.

I live in the foothills to the east of you, I dont know of any groups that meet here or in Sac. yet. Maybe I should start one. I hope you find one in your area. When you can post a new thread (after 15) posts, ask again. Otherwise, start one yourself here in a post. I might be interested in joining one is Sac. on occasion.

Good luck to you, and welcome to ECF.

Pretty much the only retail outlets you're going to find will be the mall kiosks, and those are primarily populated by Smoking Everywhere shops. The conventional wisdom on these boards is to stear clear . . . expensive, expensive, expensive.

You're basically going to be buying online, but no worries . . . easy enough to do.

I, too, think you're right on the money with a Screwdriver or a Dura-C (branded version of the 510). Manual batteries are the bomb. ;)

Both provide good, strong vapes. As wv2win explained, the batteries are a HUGE difference. Depending on whether you're a light vapor or a heavy vapor, you'll find anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to 4 hours on a battery charge for the 510. With a SD, though, you'll easily get 4 hours, and you'll most likely get 6-8. Plus, the SD batteries are indeed cheaper.

With that in mind, why would anyone go with a 510 instead of a SD? Well, first, the 510 is substantially cheaper. You can pick up a 510 from www.widowsbeadwork.com for $50 (s/h is free). That's a heck of a lot cheaper than the current $150+ (depending on the exchange rate) for the Screwdriver being shipped from the UK. (I understand Totally Wicked will be carrying the SD soon, but even so, it's pricey.)

Now, *I* think that ultimately, I'll save money with the SD because the batteries are so cheap. Likewise, the 901 atomizers the SD uses are cheaper than the 510 atomizers.

The other reason someone might want to go with a 510 as opposed to a SD is because the 510 is smaller and looks vaguely analog-like in terms of its size and feel. Some folks simply feel more comfortable vaping with a device that looks like a tobacco cigarette or a pen, and making the transition to something more reminiscent of, well, a screwdriver, may be kind of hard.

Of course, after you've been vaping for awhile, you'll pretty much get to the point where you don't care at all what it looks like . . . it really does become function over form.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with either the SD or the 510, imo.
