Hi all,

Thank you for viewing my thread. I've got a question that essentially stems from my anxiety regarding toxins/poisons in my house, and I was hoping I might be able to find some advice here.

I'm transitioning from smoking but as I'm a light smoker I'm using 0mg nicotine liquid. However as part of what I deal with on a daily basis, I'm terribly anxious about any of my two cats somehow getting into my e-liquid. I keep the e-liquid in a box inside a draw, but it still stresses me out that they may somehow be exposed to it.

Essentially my question is, how toxic is 0 nic liquid to cats? If there's any chance they could be harmed by having it in the house I might have to try another way to quit smoking. For info, I'm using the Halo Robust tobacco and Menthol 0mg liquids.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Vaping inside and around your cat will be of no harm to it.

Neither is immediately poisonous in small doses (both have been used in dog food) and as far as I know VG is fine. The vapor also isn't a problem. Ingested PG however can cause toxicosis in dogs and Heinz Body Anemia in cats. The LD50 for dogs is 9 mL per 19.8 pounds (9 kg) of weight. Like with children, keep your juices out of their reach.

I've never heard of any actual cases of anything but nicotine causing harm to pets, but PG (propylene glycol), one of the main ingredients in ejuice, is toxic to cats. It's a common ingredient in soft dog treats, although there are concerns about regular use with dogs. It was initially used for cat treats as well, which is how the problem was discovered.

I haven't been able to find solid data on how much PG you need to cause a problem - I get the impression that it depends on the cat. Trace amounts from vaping in their presence doesn't seem to be a problem. My cats are quite happy with my switch, and I know many other vapers who vape around their felines with no harm done. On the other hand, if they lick up a spill or you somehow drip some PG on them and they groom it off, that might well be enough to hurt them. I can't say my cats have ever shown any interest in my ejuice, but I do make sure to put them in another room when I mix my own juice.

Another thing to consider is relative risk. Nicotine is also toxic to all animals. A cigarette .... in an ashtray probably has more potential to harm an animal than a bottle of ejuice under normal handling.

Wow, such quick responses! Thank you!

This is my main concern. I'm always very careful, but I'm always worried I might have missed a few drops on my counter and they'll find it.

This is great to know - I might switch exclusively to VG for this reason.

Thank you all for your advice! Much appreciated!

StormFinch, I didn't know that about PG... seems like it would take a lot to cause issues.

I should have said ~ (approximately) 9 mL because like people, every dog is different. PG breaks down into lactic acid in the body and is expelled through the kidneys, human or dog. Humans however tend to eliminate it more efficiently while dogs are at risk for acidosis. Large doses of PG can actually trigger a false positive when doing Ethylene Glycol poisoning blood work on dogs.

I'm just as paranoid about ejuice around my kitty and I vape 10mg nic.

When I'm refilling a tank or squonk bottle, I have a paper towel under the mod or bottle to catch any drips. When I rewick an atty, old wet wicks get thrown out straight away. My cat is a lunatic, who loves to eat cotton. So I also have to hide the dry wicks ;)

I'm not worried about vaping nic juice around her however.

I had to put my cat down last week. My vet said he either got into some poison like ethylene glycol or had a genetic kidney disease. He got sick the same week I bottled up 6 L of 100 mg nic in PG for my freezer. At first I thought maybe he had gotten into it but I found an article saying besides the vomiting he was experiencing, he would have walked drunk and a few other symptoms from the nicotine toxicity. He did not have those. He lingered for 2 months while I tried to save him. It was awful. Anyways, I dont now think he was exposed to any of my DIY stuff or juice. Point is if your cat is experiencing vomiting or failing to eat take it to the vet. Exposure to Ethylene glycol can be cured in a short window. I dont know about PG exposure. Maybe best to ask your vet?

It is very safe... even if they somehow ingested some. It's the nicotine that would be an issue. You can vape around them too... no worries. If you start using juice with nic, go outside.

    Incorrect!

Cats are very sensitive to Propylene Glycol, so much so that there are regulations against it’s use in cat food. That said, second hand vapor should not be an issue, but if you notice your cats eyes watering, you may want to vape while Fluffy is not present.

I have a lot of cats and none of them have ever had any negative experiences or any health problems from my vaping and I make my own e-liquid sometimes. With zero Nic you're reducing the problem or the possible problem even more. Your cat would be more likely to get sick from chewing on a cigarette .... then it would be from licking up up small amount of VG. Now PG can present a problem as someone else has mentioned your cat is not likely to do that but it is best to keep it stored where your cats can't access it. If you're very very nervous you could get a lock box. It wouldn't take much to keep a cat out of a lockbox. Your cat would probably have to drink 10 milliliter bottle of PG to have any ill effect. Maybe a little less I don't think Studies have been done on cats. The amount your cat is likely to come into contact with is not going to hurt your cat. If you have a little bit on your hands and your cat licks your hand it's going to be okay

Vaping is under attack by the establishment right now, but even the exceedingly biased scientists funded by the ANTZ are having difficulty establishing a toxicity level for direct inhalation by humans. Sidestream vapor that has been diluted in many times its volume of ambient air seems unlikely to cause harm. And if a personal testimonial may sway you, I'll have you know I've been blowing clouds in a small apartment with my cat for seven years and she's the picture of health at age 12.
