Legit questions and comments are always welcome.

A "troll" is someone who makes a post with the sole purpose of eliciting a reaction by posting a controversial topic. This post is often made without and further commentary outlining or supporting the position presented in the post. Trolls often make the first post to a thread and never return. For example:

"I don't understand all the negative feelings towards Nazi's. They seem OK to me:----TROLL

or

"I've heard that using ecigs can cause a third eye to emerge form the back of your head"(with no supporting evidence, links, etc....)---TROLL

Trust me when I say, you'll know it when you see it.

Clear...

So when someone vents to the community, there "trolling".

Not necessarily, what I posted above were not examples of venting. Venting is posting a gripe, usually accompanied by reasons for venting in the first place. Sometimes a troll is disguised as a "vent". But if I am venting, I will usually outline the reasons I am upset. A troll usually doesn't give reasons.........

Trolls will post things that they know will purposely tick off the forum and cause a 100 page thread (just an example... A lot of replies) of heated replies. The community most likely hasn't ever heard of the member that is doing the trolling, usually new members with a low post count.

I call bs...lol...really.

It's a meaningless buzzword like proactive and terrorist. Don't ask me why. It just is.

Hardly meaningless. A motivated troll can wreak a lot of havoc if they aren't nipped in the bud. They can RUIN the sense of community in a forum, they can split cohesive groups into warring factions, in short, they can do a lot of damage.

A troll is deliberately provocative. There are lots of different types of trolling behavior. Making a flame-bait post is just one method.

Some like to be sympathy sponges, posting all their "woe-is-me" stories in a bid to get attention, or maybe more.

Some like to sock puppet (creating multiple accounts/profiles). Sometimes they use the sock puppet to support their own unpopular posts, sometimes they use a sock puppet to COUNTER their posts and create drama where none existed.

True trolls are in it for their own amusement. They just want to throw out something that people will get fired up over, then chuckle when someone takes the bait.

I watched the forum at Snopes almost implode because of one troll a few years ago. Google "Snopes Kyoko", it's documented all over the place. One person had a pretty big effect on that forum. I swore off posting on forums after that, and it was only after much hesitation that I signed up here. It's an experience that has stuck with me simply because of its magnitude.

Thankfully, I haven't seen anything like that here (although some areas are snarkier than others). Some grumpy people, some confrontational people, but... I try to avoid the flamey stuff when I see it. I think the mods do a pretty good job of keeping it down to a dull roar.

If you see something that seems like it might be a little troll-y, your best bet is to take it to a mod, and refrain from posting accusations which just add fuel to the fire. Let a mod handle something if you think it's out of hand.

Good advice. 90% of the stuff that gets out of hand could have been stopped well before if reported. With thousands of posts each day and growing, we don't always see things until it is past the point of no return.

LOL @ sock puppet. as far as I can tell based on it's contextual use on this forum a troll is someone who doesn't agree with the person using the buzzword.

I am not even sure what this means.
In other words: If everytime that word gets used it is accurate then all you have to do to be a troll is disagree with a person who likes to use the word. I have been called a troll about a dozen times. Am I? Hmm I always have something to say and I don't live under a bridge.

It's like any other derogatory term. It applies to who you use it on if you use it when you choose to do so but only in your mind.

Oh, I now understand what you are saying. So in your world, there are no trolls or threads started just to cause trouble?

I wouldn't go that far no. Sure there are trouble makers. But there is no one size fits all cookie cutter label to describe them. At least not in my opinion.

Besides if we have to use a derogatory term for the trouble makers here I think you have created a better one. I remember it from your description when you weren't yet a mod. It was assclowns. I forget exactly what it said but it was something like. Elendil doesn't tolerate assclown's.

Why is assclown better then troll? well it involves more letters which is good for the hand eye coordination and it utilizes the word ... which is a personal favorite of mine. Perhaps assclown lacks the mythological and cultural significance of the word troll but hey, trends change!

Try saying both out loud. Troll sounds like a frog in the throat. But assclown rolls right off the tounge :p
