Hi all I need some help, I bought some very nice momentary switches 3a , form a market stall, I have put one in a box mod I was making, the atomizer comes on straight away but goes of when I press the switch in, is there anything I can do to stop this, they are a real nice switch, I have heard something about a n/o & n/c switch I don't now what these are
Please help thanks Tony2

You said switches,,, as in more than one? test the others to see if they are N/O or N/C.
N/O= normally open is what you want. It will close when you push it. N/C is backwards. it is on all the time and turns off when you push it. This sounds like what you have (as Parallex said). If they are all N/C they won't work for what you are building. Perhaps you could trade them to someone making a more complicated mod. .

Hi tony2stix,

I agree with what they were saying above...

Couple of thoughts:

1) Hang on to one or two of em, trade the rest. Hang on to em because:
2) Some of the devices used to regulate 5v, vv, HV mods are active-high. Others are active-low. So, you could probably find a use for these switches if you really wish to. I forget what devices have active-low logic... maybe a switching regulator or booster.

Only worth keeping if you really like the feel of the switches tho, since the inhibit/enable pins only need low-amp (small) switches. Even in these cases, people often use high-amp normally open switches and don't use the enable pins.

I only mention this since you said they are really nice switches.

Another thought... Once you have a voltage regulator, you can use nc switches. You would need the proper resistor wired to pull the pin high, but the button would be normally closed and ground it out (low). Pressing the button would open the switch removing the ground "short" and allowing the pin to go high, probably through another resistor. This is not a proper design/description so check it out 1st.

There are inverters that switch logic levels too. I'm not one of the electronics experts here. But if you really like the switches, someone should be able to chime in and give you a fairly simple circuit that inverts the logic of the pin, or uses a part that already has the proper gate logic.

So, there could be a 5v or vv mod in your future with those nice switches.

If you can switch it out for the same button that you like for NO rather than NC, great.
2 cents.

You could build evercool mods with them. The TI regulator has the inhibit pin that works with the normally closed (n/c) switches you have.

Just for reference, a closed circuit means that all parts are connected. When it is open that means there is a break in the circuit somewhere (aka switch). When a switch is normally open, you press the button to close the circuit. When it is normally closed, the circuit is on and working until you open it by pressing the switch. Personally I prefer n/o, because I don't want to waste any energy on the circuit waiting for me to press a button.

Hi and thanks to everyones comments it is much appreciated, stouchon have you a link on the mods you have mentioned and how to do them would be a great help
I purchased a reg board like the one from the thread on how to build a V V mod
DC-DC Converter Board regulator In:3-30V Out:1.3-18V - eBay (item 300459975900 end time Mar-23-11 23:28:48 PDT)
Would my n/c switches be suitable with this reg board if so how would I go about it, Thanks again all
Tony2

Sorry but you still need a N/O switch for that board.
I have used that board,,, it is a good.

Make sure you don't plug in the white connectors until it's ready to go....it's a one time deal. You can remove them, but chances are you'll ruin the connectors/board in the process.

There should be all the information you need in those pages somewhere. Using a N\C switch is about 7 to 10 pages in I believe. I would suggest you go with the TI evercool regulator. It seems to be the most efficient from what I have read. They are pretty durable as well. I have made three or so and with many mistakes (I am not the most careful and usually disregard safety concerns). Those regulators have survived shorts, wrong polarity and exploding capacitors. All three are still going strong.
