Hello AngiBe. I just found this thread and I thought I would chime in, even though I'm still a noob, only vaping now for 3 weeks...
Anyhoo, I started off with Tribeca and Prime 15. Both of those flavors were really funky to me at first. The Prime 15 less so. This was in carto form. But by the end of the pack of cartos, I determined that I really love Prime 15, and Tribeca was just starting to grow on me. So I went out and bought a small bottle of Prime 15 and that quickly became my all day vape. I really love the subtle cocoa thing going on there, which is VERY minimal. Tribeca, on the other hand, is not that subtle! I know it was growing on me toward the end of the pack, but I still haven't bought a bottle of it, because it still seems too nutty and caramelly, so I can't imagine it being an ADV for me.
My starter kit also came with a free sample of the Southern Classic. This one was, right from the very beginning, just AWFUL to me, and I let it sit for 3 weeks before just today, giving it another try with my morning coffee, and it is now AWESOME!!! I really don't understand how something can go from sucky to awesome like that, but it did. I even brought a full mini-tank of it with me to work today. Just, awesome.
So, it definitely seems like steeping, or just letting a bottle sit with cap off for a few weeks, is very necessary on some of Halo's juices. I know everyone already says that, but I will now echo those sentiments. I currently have a bottle of Turkish, Torque, and Longhorn steeping as well. I really liked Torque 56 when I first tried it in carto form. So I bought a bottle, and the liquid does not seem to be the same in a mini tank. So I'm steeping it. Turkish, I've only tried in liquid, and it was very perfumey when I first received it, so it too is steeping. Longhorn, my god, made me almost puke because of that sickly sweet cavendish smell coming from the bottle... STEEPING!!
Prime 15 is really the ultimate in flavors for real tobacco flavor lovers. In my opinion anyway. I guess I mean cigarette tobacco flavor lovers. I think I will finally buy my first large bottle, and it will be the Prime!!

Oh yeah, to answer your original question, about using mini tanks for taste-testing... I definitely think this is the best way. The tanks are cheap, they are very easily swapped around, and we really get the full effect of the flavors as opposed to direct dripping onto a modified carto (I've already tried this, yes). So you did the best thing, IMO, by just ordering a bunch of mini tanks. In regards to filling the tanks with a juice you've never tried before, only to find out it still needs to be steeped more... just go for it! I've done this twice with my Turkish, and I still think it needs to be steeped more, so I just pour it right back into the bottle again! I can't imagine this will harm my experience of the liquid or the flavor in any way.
Cheers.
