Charlie Sheen Cheats Smoking Law in Toronto

4/14/2011 5:45 PM PDT by TMZ Staff
Charlie Sheen just found a way to skirt Toronto's strict anti-smoking laws during his show there -- lighting up an electronic cigarette.

Shortly after Charlie hit the stage in Toronto's Massey Hall ... our spies say he bragged about not having an ashtray and said he didn't need any cigs. However, a few minutes later he sparked up one of those electronic cigarettes.

Massey Hall management told TMZ they might shut down the show if Charlie lit up on stage because they could face up to $100,000 in fines from the city.

Charlie's been smoking almost non-stop during every other stop on the tour.

We're told he did light up some real tobacco though ... in front of fans who gathered outside the theater right before the show.

I know we need more high profile people vaping, but I'm wondering how someone as mentally unbalanced as Sheen vaping might hurt our cause. Oh, well, I guess the more people see them used in public, the better, right?

I love Charlie tbh, but I think it's kind of lame the only reason he was caught in public using one was because he would be fined if he smoked a real cig.

I'm not as worried about that as this:

Charlie Sheen just found a way to skirt Toronto's strict anti-smoking laws during his show there -- lighting up an electronic cigarette.

This is dangerous framing right there, and I've been seeing it more and more. First, it isn't "skirting" the law and second, no-smoking laws aren't in any way why I switched to vaping. This law-skirting business is brought up for no reason other than to make vapers sound like outlaws to help prejudice the general public against vaping.

Well, to be honest, he did do it to skirt the law because he wasn't allowed to smoke. He didn't do it because it's a better alternative or because of the wide range of flavors, or the freedom from smelling like crap. He did it to get around the no-smoking policy.

Not everyone vapes to get around laws, but in this case Charlie Sheen did.

But he wasn't "skirting the law," which implies a loophole of some sort. He was complying with it by choosing to avoid engaging in prohibited activity. this is what I mean by dangerous framing. saying "skirting" the law implies that it's just a loophole that people are taking advantage of, and implies that the loophole should be closed, when in fact the reason for the law in the first place, second-hand smoke, isn't relevant to vaping.
