Gotcha guys, thank you!
I think I will try it with both batteries (I have some short protected Li-Ions with flat tops and some not-so-AW IMRs)

One thing you will notice with a flat top battery, is that you are going to have to press the firing button about twice as hard in order to depress the tab enough to make a connection with the top of the flat top battery. This is why I much prefer AW IMR's with a nipple top on them.

Some folks have used small magnets on top of the flat top battery to reduce how much you have to depress the button, but I was always worried the magnet wouldn't release and my Grand would continue firing after I put it down and looked away...

where did you get your battery magnet tenn? I've been keeping an eye out for them but haven't found them yet. also, I recently saw a website that had a page full of silica wick, kanthal/wire, and SS mesh all on 1 page, organized nicely. I THOUGHT i bookmarked it but I just went through my bookmarks and its not there! -____- any1 know what site it might of been?

EDIT: I think I found it, or at least 1 of the sites I saw. www.stormysvaporcellar.com

I'll update this post if I find the one I remember seeing last for any1 else interested in a 1 stop shop.

I use a battery button on 2 Panasonic batteries I have (with my Grand) and I've never had the firing pin not release. It's not an issue at all for me.

And I've used flat top batteries before with no issue .... I would say you have to push "twice as hard" because its not hard at all. But you do have to push twice as far before it fires.

The biggest thing for me with non AW IMR batts is the length. Even 1mm longer might make the damage more severe if you have a short and the spring needs to shrink up that much more in the time required to save a melting button.

For me also the only two brand I use are AW and Panasonic ...... not all batts are equal by a long shot and you might find 2500 mAh batts that don't last as long or work as well as an AW IMR 1600 or 2000 mAh. And if you have batts that say they are more than 2500 mAh I can almost guarantee they are too long to use safely. If you decided to go with non IMR I would still stay with the AW brand but the 2200 mAh button top are about as long as you can go IMHO. It think theres a 2600 thats questionable and a 2900 that is without question too long ......

Again just my opinion. But if your going to buy the best mod out there its worth it to get the best batts as well.

Congrats on your Grand purchase.

Agree with Tim on all he said.
Bushmaster (Roger) was kind enough to send them to me when I was one of the first here to buy the Panasonic IMR 18650 batteries and didn't realize they were flat tops. (They sell the same battery now with a button). When they came, I could use them fine, but I was having to push the button down further, just like explained above. Anyway, you are right- these little magnets are hard to find. I came up empty handed when I just did a search for them at the typical places that they would be. That said, if you already have flat top batteries and need magnets for them, I'm thinking that the door magnets that Rob sells on his site would work. PM or email him and check with him....while you're on his site, you might want to buy a spring or two- always good to have just in case of any mishaps!!

I bought a bunch of little magnets, several sizes, in 2010 but can't remember where, sorry ; at least two different places. Before I loaded up on AW IMRs I had some flat tops that didn't play well with REOs so I did use the button magnets. I never had any issues with magnets not coming out when I took batteries out but I did find that there was one size that worked best for firing pin contact. Button magnet size was much more critical with the oldest firing pins that didn't have the tiny bend on end. All but the very olderst REOs, that haven't had an upgrade, now have the "new style" pin.

I made a mistake and purchased flat top Panasonic. I use them in Woodvils that do fine with flat tops.

I just bought 2 blue IMR 18350s from Madvapes for my new reo mini. I'm hoping they'll fit.
Guess I'll find out when my reo and the batteries get here. lol.

Might want to double check that order. I dont know of any mini's that will take a 18350 batt, unless you got a 2.0 and plan on using a kick in it. If you a got a mini 2.0 and plan on using it at 3.7v you will need the 18490 or 18500. The Reo mini uses a 14500 batt.

oh wow I didn't know that. good thing I didn't order the 18350s. I've been posting that I got the 18350 mini all over the forum and your the 1st one to correct me lol. I'll add a couple 14500 batteries to my cart now, thanks you! I would have gotten my reo and had nothing to use in it if you hadn't pointed this out. wow. now my reo is probably going to get here before my 14500 batteries :( I thought I'd be able to use my provari battery in it on and off until the new batteries came. shoooot.

Thanks for correcting me :)

I certainly did mean twice as far, not twice as hard.
