Ughhhh...please help!

Hi guys...

I could really use some help. I'm new to the vaping world. Just got a new nautilus tank and iStick 40w setup. It has the stock 1.6 ohm coil in it. I filled it all the way, put a couple drops on the coil head, let it sit for a good 10 mins, took a couple primer pulls. Right now I have it on 6.1w as I'm trying to break in the new coil like I've read. I'm not getting any vapor until after I take a couple of quick pulls on it. Not until about the 3rd quick pull. Then I'll try to take a longer pull and I'll get some vapor but not a big cloud. Then the next pull will be nothing. Like I said, I'm new and not sure what to do at this point. Do I increase the wattage? Decrease the wattage? Keep hitting at this wattage? I got the Nautilus because I heard it's fool proof. They apparently haven't met this fool! Any advice and help you guys could give me would be most appreciated!! I'd really rather not go back to cigarettes and the stress of this is making me ready to go buy a pack!! Thanks!

Yeah, I'd bump the wattage up a bit. Sounds like the coil is cold and not making any vapor until it has a couple of fires to warm up. Even 12 watts would not be too high for a coil of that value, so you've got some head room. They also don't take forever to break in. I'd say inch it up a watt and see if that helps. If it does, you're on the right track. It's probably broken in enough you can safely raise the wattage.

Sounds to me like the wattage your trying to vape at may be too low for the atty to vaporize the liquid your trying to vape. Either that or the coil head may be slightly flooded. Just turn up the wattage a bit on it and try it a few more times. As far as "break in time" is concerned. No need to be overly cautious with breaking in the coil heads too much - just run them at 3.7V and don't go above 4.2V for a little while and all should be well. Driving them too hard for too long will shorten their life span. Just remember - when you look at the wattage you have it set at what is the voltage applied to that setting? According to my calculator - its 3.1V ... which IMO is WAY TOO LOW! The prime performance of a coil head is 3.7V - 4.2V. Adjust power up.

Welcome to ECF by the way!

1st, always thoroughly prime a new/unused head.
Drip drops on top of screen & allow to soak in until wicking material is fully saturated. May take 3 ~ 10 drops depending on size of drops.
Install head into base tight, fill tank, install tank to base snug, just tight enough to prevent leaking.
Hold finger over airflow hole & take a few un powered primer puffs/ inhales. You should see a bubble or three rise from the wicking holes.
Set air flow control, start off at a low power setting & work your way up taking a vape or three on each setting until you find what you like.
If you get a hint of burnt taste turn it down.

I don't care for the 1.6Ω heads & haven't had much luck with them.
With the 1.8Ω heads I vape between 12w ~ 16w most of the time, using 50/50 clear non sweet juice.

IMO, 6w is extremely low for a nautilus bvc head, I'd try starting a new head at 8.5w and go up from there.

Dark or colored, thick and especially sweet juices tend to clog wicking material & gunk coils rapidly as does under powering.

I am also using an aspire coil 1.6 ohm at 4.21v/10.6 watts and it works very well. Granted this is in a K1 tank but the main difference would be just the amount of juice the 2 tanks hold. I just use a DIY 80 vg / 20 pg juice, with menthol crystals for flavor so they go for a darn long time :) I could still toss more at them, but here is the thing about using menthol crystals...they will WRECK you if too strong so :p

Good luck and happy vaping!

Thank you all so much!!! You're all rockstars in my eyes! I have it at 8.1 right now and it's working like a champ!! I figured it was low, I was just worried cause I read about people burning out their coils right away. I really just made it more complicated than it really is. Typical me. Thanks again, guys! And I'm sure you'll all be hearing much more from me haha

Night,
Not a fan of menthol, but my brother is and he's a new vape as well. Quick question for you, if you don't mind...He said most of the juices he's tried that claim to be menthol just have a minty flavor. Do you have any suggestions for a "real" menthol juice?

Yup, closer to that 3.7V sweet spot. Figured it'd be too low of power. Happy vaping.

Glad we could help, if 8.1 is doing it for you that is great. You still have some room left above that if needed. Even if you went overboard the worst case would be the coil burnt out and you are out $1-2 for the lesson, providing you have another coil available...if not go shopping soon because I can guarantee 2 things:

1. Eventually the coil will get old and either perform poorly or die.

2. If you are in a situation as a new vaper coming off cigarettes and are forced to smoke one due to your only vape rig being non operational after stopping or shortly after using cigarettes, the evil cancer stick will taste like .... I know this not because my rig went down but after about 10 days of vaping and zero cigarette use I thought to myself, hey lets try one just to see what it is like now... One hit and BOOM - I felt JUST like Meg Mucklebones after trying to eat poor Screwball in Legend as seen in this clip at 1:49:

PS: No fairies were harmed although a ... (British for cigarette) was rather mercilessly burnt, yelled at for being fouler than the blackest witch, viciously crushed then thrown into a garbage bin along with many of it's mates. Also I was not sorry for that, not one little bit, no.

I always start out a new wick (the part that might burn) at 8w, and I use strictly single-coil; with a dual coil like a Nautilus, you really need more power to get it to go at all, so starting out at 8w wouldn't burn it, and once it's working well, you could even go higher, depending on the airflow you prefer.

Welcome to ECF!

Glad to hear it. I vape my nautilus mini's at 8w. Depending on the juice I sometimes go to 9w. :)

Night,
Not a fan of menthol, but my brother is and he's a new vape as well. Quick question for you, if you don't mind...He said most of the juices he's tried that claim to be menthol just have a minty flavor. Do you have any suggestions for a "real" menthol juice?

This would depend on what he thinks is a "real" menthol. If he means Menthol + Tobacco then I am sorry but I can't help as I loathe tobacco flavors now and the last I tried any was 5 years ago. If he has a tobacco he likes he could add the menthol crystals however. If he means a PURE menthol flavor then the Menthol crystals I use should do the trick. I can pretty much guarantee they provide the cool (if not downright freezing) effect obtained as well as nothing but clean menthol taste. I cannot stress how STRONG they are however. 4 ounces has lasted my wife and I well over a year now. granted we probaly only vape 2 mills a day between the both of us.

It is generally not a good idea to handle them with your bare hands then touch your lips or god forbid rub your eyes . We keep them in a very tightly sealed jar and have a small thin flexible plastic cup we use to scoop up a tiny amount of the crystals then pour into a dripper bottle. If he sub ohms I would not advise more than a tiny amount (smaller than the smilies here ) in a 10 ml bottle to test with. He can always add more in, but the only way to get it out if you mixed it too strong is to cut it by at least 50%.
If you mix it too strong and sub ohm it all I can say is :evil: :danger: :evil:

You can find them many places, I got mine here http://www.amazon.com/GreenHealth-C...d=1449250701&sr=8-1&keywords=menthol+crystals

They also have  POUNDS http://www.amazon.com/Greenhealth-M...=1449250701&sr=8-12&keywords=menthol+crystals

Along with many other sizes (2oz and up)

That plus some PG/VG and one can vape for a LOOONG time. I got mine at amazon as well:
VG:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015AHRST8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

and PG:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015AHRST8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

If you or he already have pg/vg then it is cheap try to them. ($6-8)

Good luck, and happy vaping!

Welcome to ECF. I too was a menthol smoker when I first started vaping. The minty flavors just did not cut it for me. Many vendors use a mint blend as they do seem to satisfy some menthol smokers.

I have been making my own juice for many years now so have not tried any vendor juice in a long time. This may be worth a try for your brother though as I do know that they use flavor made from menthol crystals and not mint.
Menthol E Juice Baker Vapor

Good luck to you both and hang in there. It really does get easier as you go. This time next year, you will know more about vaping than you ever wanted to ;)
