Unsolvable wicking problem

Hello guys -

So I've been using rda's for quite a while. Recently, I've been having problems with the juice wicking and burning cotton taste after a few drags. This has been happening for a while causing me to use up much more juice than i need to.

Things that I've tried:
  • New wicking techniques (currently using the scottish wicking techinqe)
  • Using less over all cotton
  • Using thinner wicks
  • Lower wattage
I suspect it could be my [japaneese organic] cotton or the coils I'm running.
I've included a pic of my build. (x2) 26/32g Kathal Clapton coils.
You can see the cotton not wicking in the picture.
I mean, the coils could be heating too fast and too hot burning the cotton. No hot spots, either. They glow perfectly together.
But, I'm not sure what's wrong. That's why I'm here haha.

Any input will be appreciated!

What type of juice are you using? There's been a lot of sucralose being added to liquids especially over the past year. It sweetens the liquid up a lot but also causes your wicks/coils to gunk up extremely fast.

I recently tried Element liquids pink lemonade and it literally destroyed my wick and coil after about 10 Ml's.

My other thought is maybe your mod is misreading your coil resistance. I would check the resistance on your ohm reader and/or other mods to see if that could be it.

I'm using 80vg/20pg juice. but ive started to "break in" my wicks by firing the mod and letting the juice wick thoroughly. Also, I 've been dripping through the drip tip to allow the cotton to actually wick from the bottom up, and the vape has been significantly better.

When i look at your pic i see your left coil leg is the same colour as the coil, it should really be the same colour as the leg on the right , this leads me to think that you have a hot leg contributing or causing that burnt taste you're experiencing, with the cap off your rda fire it a few times for the length of time or a little longer than you usually would when vaping on it and keep an eye on the legs for heating, keep pulsing it like this until the wick is almost dry, with juice on the legs they won't show any heating so don't keep re-juicing the wick!
Or just take the wick out and test fire it, again give it a fire for the length of time you would probably vape on it whilst checking around the legs for heating.
If you have hot legs you can sometimes get rid of it by installing your mandrel back into your coil and giving it a little tug(make sure you re-check your post screws are still tight after doing this) and or after removing the mandrel you can alternate between strumming and pulsing the coil, even undoing the post screws on the coil and moving the coil legs into the post holes a little more can get rid of it.

If its plain cotton taste you're getting then normally it's probably a tight wick , but you can also get it if say when your pulling your wick through your coil and you've managed to snag it and you create a gap between the wick and coil and this will burn but seen as you're using spaced wraps this is unlikely.

Also as Dataton mentioned a loose post screw can also cause the coil to fire hot so check them.

currently vaping around 50 - 60 watts on a 0.3 ohm build. I've found the sweet spot to be 55W.

On mine, I have to saturate my cotton after 3 or 4 pulls. You will definately go through more juice with 60 watts. If you are getting burnt cotton taste, it is because your cotton is drying out. You will need to drip more often or use less power.

I always needed to keep my velocity well wet to not get any dry hits. And I was running 3mm coils to keep up with the demand. At 2mm coils, I would have to direct drip on the coils.

Just a thought but it looks like you're using too much cotton and your tails look compact.

San Antonio,Texas

That's because he's done the Scottish roll:| Must be the hype that its been given that people are using it!
I tried wicking like this along time ago before it was named this and i found that it gave me a slight cotton taste and i think this was because it wasn't keeping up with the supply, it was great when saturated with juice but otherwise i found the normal style of wicking much better.

Rayon is a good option But you have to also keep that saturated, and you know that he's gonna have to wick the same thickness of rayon as he's done with the cotton and the tails are gonna be just as thick, and even if you trim/taper them down then you start to lose out because rayon doesn't wick as fast across the fibers as it does along the length.

A long time ago in the days of cig-a-likes a material called "Blue Foam" was used to replace the poly-fill in the pre-filled carts. It is used for aquarium filters and was very wick-able. Has anyone tried it in place of cotton?
That stuff is called rockwool over here by the aquarium fans. They're used to wad down plants into small baskets as well. Went to google them ans this is what I found: Mineral wool - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And it says: "Due to the mechanical effect of fibres, mineral wool products may cause temporary skin itching." There's also mention of carcenogenicity...
Overall, it doesn't sound good.

Blue Foam, in a Modern Day RDA, running New-Normal Sub Ohms, at New-Normal Wattages... No Way.

Blue Foam Didn't work all that great Back-in-the-Day using an Atty/Cart. And a Blue Dry Hit at 11 watts on some Circa 2010 Atty/Cart is a Bell Ringer.

A Blue Foam Dry Hit at 55 Watts on a .3 Ohms Build would probably cause an Attomizer Fire. A Fire emitting some Very Toxic Chemical Compounds.

This stuff is highly flammable?
