Hey all, I've been vaping for around a year and recently found this forum. Looks like I have been a newbie for year, haha. Anyway, I have been using a standard ego2 kit that I got on the cheap with kanger evod cleartos. I was pretty happy with this setup because it's simple and it works.

However, today over my lunch break I went down to a local shop where they have a lounge type setup where they let you sample all their flavors (I love this place, the guys who run it are so nice and helpful) and they had a bunch of their flavors set up in different tank/battery setups than the small ego type they have most of their samples in. I'm not really sure what it was, the battery was this thing like a roll of quarters and the atty was glass and stainless, sort of short and fat with a big wide tip on it, but the juice tasted SO much better out of these things, just richer and smoother and all around better.

As you can probably tell, I don't really know all that much about equipment, I was happy with what I had and so never had an impetus to learn. Frankly, up until now my impression of the big setups was that they were a form of compensation, if you catch my drift. But I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong and now that I've tried a better set up, I think I might want to upgrade to something more advanced than the ego, at least for when I am relaxing at home. (Still don't think I could use one of these big guys when out n about without feeling like Fry from Futurama trying to learn the holophoner, lol!)

I guess my base questions are:

What are some recommendations for something better than ego that's not absurdly expensive?

What do I need to do differently with a more complicated setup?

Can anyone point me to a sort of 'intermediate' level guide to what's what? My internet searches either come up with guides that are too basic (this is how vaping works!) or too advanced (sub ohms and coils and building things and terms I'm not familiar with).

Any input is appreciated! Sorry I'm such an ignorant noob!

Hello and welcome to the forum @Kitty-Nin. Glad to have you here!:)

If you are interested in learning more about e-cigarettes (and all the parts and pieces) below are some blog posts by ECF member @Baditude that I highly recommend. Read both of them.
Here are a few more links from New Members Information <= Link covers many topics. Here are two of them:
Nicotine

A "general guideline" for nicotine concentration in e-liquid to the number of cigarettes smoked per day. If you are subohming (resistance under 1.0Ω) cut these nicotine levels by at least 50%.

06 mg = 10 cigarettes or less
12 mg = 20 cigarettes
18 mg = 30 cigarettes
24 mg = 40 cigarettes

eLiquid/Juice

PG = Propylene Glycol - the "flavor carrier" of e-liquid. A secondary source of "throat hit", but not as strong as the nicotine concentration. Some people have a sensitivity or even an allergy to PG. It's very thin.

VG = Vegetable Glycerin - the "vapor maker" of e-liquid. Used as a sweeter in many food sources, and also as a skin emollient. It's very thick. Often labeled just "Glycerine"

PG and VG are often used together in different ratios in e-liquid. For example, a 50/50 PG/VG ratio. Some juice vendors offer a range of different ratios as far as PG/VG.

I don't know what a "roll of quarters" is (I'm guessing like some coins in paper, as you'd find at the bank).

So, I'm guessing a small box mod like the iStick with a glass clearo. Yup... that's my set-up for most of the time. Today, it was iStick 30w and mini Nautilus. Still going strong on these after 12 months.

:)

@Susan~S Thanks! That looks like what I need, I'll definitely read those. I'm pretty well versed on what goes into liquid, it's the hardware that I don't know much about, but thank you.

@djsvapour Haha, I know that's not a very good description, they were busy with other customers so I didn't get to ask them too much about it. The battery was like a big, souped up ego battery (in appearance) with about the diameter and weight of a roll of quarters. Best thing I could think to relate it to, haha.

Nope... you did a good job. I just don't know the size of a quarter. If it was perfectly round it wouldn't be a box mod, I don't think. A Provari P3 would be round. It was also be expensive... but good! :)

@djsvapour Haha, my fault then, I shouldn't assume most people online are familiar with American money. They definititely had those zombie edition Provaris in the display case, I assume that the ones they had out were something.... Similar but cheaper.

I might pop back there later tonight and ask them about upgrading my gear. I definitely want a better experience, but I don't really want to spend an arm and a leg.

+1 on that idea.

In case I don't see your thread, I often recommend an iStick 30 watt or Coolfire 4 (both mods) with an Aspire Mini Nautillus or eLeaf GS Air M (both tanks) if you are a mouth-to-lung inhaler. Videos below.

eLeaf iStick 30 Watt
Innokin Coolfire 4
Aspire Nautilus Mini
eLeaf GS Air M Tank

If you would like to lung inhale (with the 0.5Ω coil) check out the Kanger Subox Mini Kit

I don't lung inhale, I'm definitely a mouth-to-lung or french inhale type of smoker.

Definitely looking at that Innokin Coolfire 4, I'm seeing some great prices on kits online. Does anyone know if it's one where I would have to buy the battery separate, or does it come with the battery as well? I also already have a pretty decent collection of Kanger EVOD tanks, since I like to have lots of tanks because I flavor hop a lot. I know you can't use a sub-ohm tank on a battery not designed for that, but are you able to use a 'regular' tank on a sub-ohm battery? Would it be a matter of using a different setting, or is it just not possible? I have been reading everything you linked, but I don't have headphones with me today so I can't watch the videos until later tonight.

The Coolfire 4 & the iStick 30 watt both have internal batteries. No need to buy separate batteries or a charger.

You can use you current tanks on battery capable of firing a subΩ coil. The Coolfire 4 has a 510 thread so any tank with a 510 thread could be used. If any of your current tanks are Ego threaded, you may need to purchase a 510/Ego adapter (pictured on the right). I don't think the Coolfire 4 comes with one.

I ended up going back to my local shop and picked up the CoolFire. Already love it. It does come with the Ego adapter, but I was told to avoid using because they've had people vend their pins with it. Not sure whether that's due to the adapter itself or people overtightening and such. Anyway, they showed me how to get it set up and I have been vaping Moonsugar from Mr. Goodvape at 18 watts tonight. This was my first 'favorite' juice and always consistently tasted good, and it is orders of magnitude better on this than with the Ego. Never would have believed it had I not tried it. So excited to try other flavors in this thing, and learn more about it as I get familiar with it.

Thanks so much @Susan~S for posting all those links and all that info. There's a pretty overwhelming amount of info out there, and your help is really what made me confident I'd done enough research to pull the trigger on a more expensive kit. Just want to say really, sincerely, thank you for taking time out of your day to do that.
