My 510 USB Passthru just blew up! The inside of the case where it holds the battery is melted, I felt it get hotter and hotter when I removed the battery and saw a lil melted bubble form and the battery itself smells like its leaking acid.

Why in the heck do they use a battery in the first place? Isn't the usb port enough power to charge the atty? Siigh! Speaking of batterys, 510 batterys only last 30mins so I'm RMA'in those too!

So my passthru is done and I won't have any battery's and I can't go back to analogs because they taste horrendous now! Oh Why God WHY!!!

The batteries are simply too small for the job they do! The poor things have to meet the demands of the atomiser which takes over an amp whilst keeping the sleek cigarette look so its no surprise that we need plenty of spares or a mod!

The 510 passthrough has the in-line battery to protect your USB ports whilst delivering enough juice to the atomiser that some USB ports cannot deliver! They aren't supposed to go boom though!!!

yes i have a ipod charger which is basically that. Its not connected to my computer in anyway. Sooo I'm assuming I need some Soldering Iron and tools to do this..

Yes you would. The reason there is a battery there is to store electriciity to supply the 510 since most computers don't have enough capacity to supply it when wired direct. The 510 atty is designed to work off 3.7 volts and will handle 5 volts, so make sure the wall charger puts out enough current. You can probalby find more info using search or in the Modders area of the forums.

you can wire it direct, taking out the battery, but you risk damaging the USB system of your computer unless you have the USB plugged into a wall socket convertor
Whoa!!!...I didn't know that, I just made one last night using a 2xAA battery box, wired direct, no battery. It worked fine and my computer hasn't conked out yet, but I unplugged it as soon as I read your post :(

btw, If I make one to include a battery, will the battery charge as I vape?

Just buy the ac usb converter. It's better to plug it into a wall outlet. There are many sellers that sell them or you can buy them at Radio Shack or wherever for 3-4 bucks...

The battery is there (simply) because the USB port usually can't put out enough current to power up the atty. It takes about 1.5 Amps to power up a 510 atty at 3.7V, 2.2 Amps to power one up at 5V. Damn precious few USB computer ports put out anywhere near that kind of power.

So the USB passthrough is actually just a 3.7V battery (yes, if your passthru has a battery you are really only vaping at 3.7V) and the USB connection is used to keep the battery charged. When you press the button you are vaping off of the battery. When you let go the USB connection rapidly charges the battery back up.

If you check your USB root port in Device Manager under Power you'll see 500mA. There are some 2 into 1 USB cables that are used to power devices that need more, but they are expensive.

1000mA AC/USB converters are dirt cheap, here's one for 1¢ at Amazon (can't post links, a search should get you there).

Need more power? Here's one on Ebay for $9.99 shipped.
