using ecigs to stop burning tobacco

I've been vaping for a couple of weeks. Burning about 1/3 as much tobacco as before. Ran out of tobacco today, trying to go just ecig. I'm craving badly. Just had an ashtray ..... tasted like crap, but made me feel better. I could have vaped and vaped and vaped and never got that feeling.

I understand that people react differently. I've been trying to do this is a way that I did not feel like I was depriving myself. I'm not very good at depriving myself - spoiled I guess. But does it get to the point that you just have to work through a few very uncomfortable days/weeks? Maybe it is just unrealistic for me to give up burning without some struggle. Or maybe I just need to give it more time using both.

I'm torn right now. I'd love to have a freshly rolled smoke. But I don't want to go back to previous levels, and I don't want to be addicted to both smoke and vap - eventually I'll have to give up on one. Maybe I should go buy a pack of factory cigs as a comprimise.

Thoughts???

Thanks
David

Welcome to the forum! First take a deep breath and don't sweat not switching immediately to all vape. You'll probably still go through some cravings as the tar and chemicals work there way out of your system.

What type of PV are you using? What strength of nic juice? I know for myself being a heavy smoker (2+ PAD for 33 yrs), I had to raise my nic strength before I was able to get totally off the analogs.

I never planned to quit. My third day vaping, I just didn't want a cigarette any more. Those first few days though I was using way higher nic juice than where I've ended up at. Throat hit was never a big deal for me. It was the pure physical mechanics of smoking that always kept me on the cancer sticks. Vaping satisfied all of that for me.

What is it that smoking does for you that vaping doesn't? Is it a physical feeling? Psychological? Some combination?

You need to keep in mind that smoking also provides other possibly addictive chemicals besides nicotine. This is probably the cause of your issue.

I smoked for the first 2 weeks I had my ecig. I made a point of taking my ecig outside with me when I went to smoke and used them simultaneously. In that time period, I found myself wanting the cigarette less and the ecig more till one day I threw out the pack and never looked back.

This experience differs for everyone and you have to find what works for you.

I was not able to totally cut out the cigs until I got some 36mg and 24mg juices. Now I have been smoke free for 6 days, and have had only 1 or 2 mild cravings for cigs.

I don't vape 36 mg all the time, but it really does the trick if I am feeling a craving! I especially find it helpful in the a.m. and after meals.

It sounds to me like you are doing great. There are a lot of us who have a more gradual transition to vaping. I only started vaping 3 weeks ago, so I feel like this is going pretty quickly for me. I'll bet you will have much less interest in cigarettes once you get your correct nic. level.

Hang in there! Think how many cigarettes you have avoided smoking already! You are doing really well! :)

I smoked american spirit regular. Rolled with a filter. Never kept close count but probably about 30 a day (today I've rolled 6 so far-really could use a couple more). I think I'll take a walk with my PV. I'll either come back with some tobaco and feel better physically, or, I'll come back with nothing and feel better mentally. If I buy tobaco I'll buy a small pouch (not a tin as usual). I guess slow progress is better than no progess.

Yeah, there is at least an 85% chance that 18mg is way too low for you.
Bump up the nicotine strength and see if that helps.

If not, then there are other options to proceed with.

I went from 16-18 nic to 24, from PAD of Marlboro reds. I also vape more frequently than I smoked -- only a handful of puffs, but more often.

Take a 5 or 6 second inhale, vs. short puffs that many of us did on regular cigarettes.

Be ready to need to drink more water -- vaping dries people out frequently.

Good luck!

I think its a bit different for everyone that tries to quit. I've been off smokes for 19 days now but I've been using my ecig on and off for over a year. For me, it was really important to get 24mg juice. No matter how much lower mg juice I smoked, it never really killed my craving for real cigarettes. It also helped me to use my ecig just like I would a real cigarette. By that I mean I would vape outside with my morning cofee, or after a meal.

Right before I quit, if I couldn't take it anymore and knew I was going to have a real cigarette, I would vape a lot before that cig. That way I wouldn't get any enjoyment from it.

The dilemma is that you're not ready to quit using tobacco--a part of you does but the other part does not. I also don't recommend going higher on the nicotine, why continue being an addict? There's only one way to do it, and that is sacrifice. There's NO other way. Yes, you'll suffer for the first few (3) days: you'll be light headed most of the time, you'll be a bit lethargic, perhaps, and you'll probably be a bit upset and nostalgic. However, rest assure your body will quickly adapt to the amount of nicotine you currently vape. Besides, you're not completely quitting, after all you are still going to be vaping and having nicotine. The addiction is truly all in your head. When you truly decide to cease consuming tobacco--commit to not using it. Remember, the only way is to sacrifice. Good luck!

if you suffer from bipolar or depression then ejuice will not supply the alkaloids you crave, sorry, .. i use stonewall desolvable tobacco also but still smoke 5 to 10 cigs a day, down from 40 a day, that's the best i can do and not feel miserable

James

July 26 smoked 09 cigs, 31 less than my usual 40 cigs a day 2917 cigarettes not smoked in 84 days by using Stonewall, Joye 510, Hello 016, Ken's BoxMod, MadVapes 2xAA Box Mod, WetBox Vaporizer (ecig) and 19 bottles of ejuice partially used , $0.28 per cig X 2917 Cigs = $816.76 diverted from cigarettes to Vaporizer (ecig). OMG I have spent over $1671.51 in 74 days on this stuff but bare in mind that my old cigarette cost was $330 a month and i have $790 in supplies so $880 in hardware and consumed ejuice

OK I bought tobaco on my walk. I'm OK with that - I guess. Figured I probably would.

I think it is the something else in cigs that keeps me tied to them. That something else is not in welbutrin, or other little pills the doctor had me try. It is not in NRT.
The nic helps alot. Maybe I need more nic but to be honest I think I was close to having too much. Still learning.
I wonder how many of those other chemicals in tobacco I'm adicted to. Maybe it is like bread - processed wheat will keep you alive, but whole wheat is better. Maybe the same with tobacco - you need the whole leaf, not just the nic. For now I'm going to be happy burning less whole leaf. I wish I could get what I want without the combustion byproducts (or maybe what my body wants is part of the byproducts.) Who knows. I wonder how those pot vaping things would work with tobacco - probably better off not finding out.

vaping hard before a cig is an interesting tactic. I might have to try that - I would rather avoid nic overdosing, but perhaps it would help me give up the other chemicals.

Thanks for your support. I bought 1.4 oz of tobacco, which at current consumption should last me 4-5 days. Maybe I can make it 6 and work from there . . .

There are many people in the same boat, if that is the boat you're in.
You are not alone.
:)

Don't stress it, and give it time.
But in the end there is really no need to combust tobacco.
