well...it does say there is a limit to 20 watt hours per single cell, so you could still mail pretty much anything...even an IMR26650 is only 14.8Wh. i might have missed it but there doesn't seem to be a limit to the number of cells shipped that meet this criteria, unless you also ship the equipment that the batteries are used in (3 batteries).

At the rate the post office is going, they have no chance of not going bankrupt. Perhaps a $.75 stamp can save them.

I find it curious that it's only an international shipment ban. Is there something about the air over the rest of the world that is different than that over the good old US of A?

Maybe this explains the packaging of my last battery order. it was for 8 14500 batteries and they came carefully bubble wrapped in 2 packs of three and 1 pack of 2 that were wrapped in another layer of bubble wrap all in a small priority box. They must have asked at the post office to find out what was legal under the new rules. It just seemed odd not to have 4 packs of 2 or 2 packs of 4.

Eventually, we will see Lithium-ion batteries shipped in wrapping similar to a charging bag. That would solve the problem. Manufacturers will develop some kind of packing/wrapping that can contain a mishap without causing a fire if this gets out of hand.

Other chemical formulations are being developed that don't have the meltdown issues, also.

Dave, I've read the same information and I believe the development is a long time coming. I'm not really concerned nearly as much about my APV batteries as I am with my cell. With all the stories about battery explosions, every time I feel heat on my hip or reach for my cell and find it is seriously overheated, I have images of a meltdown. It is a bit disconcerting.

Ok, to debunk a statement made earlier the USPS is not a government business or at least they are not government employees, thats for sure, I wish they were since my wife is a supervisor with the USPS. She told me that it was the airlines that are putting this on them. Im not sure how that makes sense either but that is what she said. UPS and Fedex have their own planes. So for what its worth there is it. I cant bother confirming what she told me but thats what she just said two minutes ago. She said it isnt permanent and that it should change maybe in January.

Lithium batteries implicated in at least two fatal cargo plane crashes since 2006. Not good at all.
I thought UPS already refuses to ship lithium batteries, that's one reason people are using USPS and FedEx?

I also Googled battery bags today and found several tests where the battery bag did no good. In one case the inner lining held but the outer covering burned "like gasoline."

And...wow, how do you get a fatal plane crash out of it? Chain reaction of some kind? Or a lot of cardboard boxes on fire?

So...now I want a GOOD battery bag, I've been charging my cell on top of my desk on top of a pile of papers by my head for the last 15 years, guess I'm lucky to be alive!

Ammo boxes might be OK for home but gee, not sure I want to try to get one on a plane in my carry-on luggage! Do we know what brands of bags are ACTUALLY effective?
