I assume this was written by CASAA's good friend Amy Sands, who heads the tobacco Prevention and Control Program for the state of Utah. Ms. Sands stood up in front of the Utah House Business and Labor Committee a few weeks ago and untruthfully equivocated the dangers of smokeless tobacco and cigarettes.

This part is good too.

• There is no legitimate scientific evidence that e-cigarettes will help smokers quit or reduce their use of any tobacco product.

So we've moved on from people saying "There is no scientific evidence that e-cigarettes work" to "There is no legitimate scientific evidence that e-cigarettes work"?

Left this comment:

The Utah Department of Health makes it sound as if the only time a smoker would ever use an e-cigarette is when they are in a place where smoking is prohibited. Two published surveys of electronic cigarette users show that smokers are using e-cigarettes as a permanent replacement for smoking at all times. In one study limited to a single brand, 31% no longer smoked. In the other study, which included participants in on-line forums where they received advice on which brands work more reliably and on how to use the devices, 82% were substituting e-cigarettes for all their smoked cigarettes, and an additional 15% had greatly reduced the number of cigarettes smoked. In contrast, the FDA-approved nicotine weaning products have an unimpressive 7% success rate. The UDH list of nicotine effects is not entirely accurate, because elements other than nicotine in smoke cause hypertension, increase cholesterol, and promote insulin resistance. Decades of research on smokers who switched to low-nitrosamine snus show that snus users have no increased risk of cancer, lung, or cardiovascular disease. The fact that nicotine is addictive illustrates why e-cigarettes are proving to be an acceptable substitute for smoking. The nicotine in e-cigarettes is no more poisonous than the nicotine in regular cigarettes. Many smokers are unwilling to give up nicotine because they are dependent on its beneficial effects. Nicotine enhances the ability to concentrate, pay attention, and remember, and helps to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety It also helps people deal with chronic fatigue and chronic pain. E-cigarettes are being used by people who smoked for decades and tried repeatedly to quit by using the FDA-approved treatments, as well as non-medicinal approaches such as classes, counseling, hypnosis, 12-step programs, and laser therapy. We were smokers who had almost given up all hope of being able to stop lighting up. To us, these products are miraculous.

So as soon as the two surveys I referenced get married, their results will be legitimate?

I've been off the radar for a couple of days and just now saw the article/interview. I was very disappointed at how the hosts of the show totally bought all the BS spouted by this Neville guy.

I posted my comment:

I generally enjoy watching Good Things Utah when I get the chance, but seeing this segment quite literally made me feel ill. David Neville said so many deceitful things during the interview that I almost was yelling "Liar!" at my screen.

I'm a Utah member of the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association, and I'm also an ex-smoker who now uses electronic cigarettes. I have several friends who are also e-cigarette-using ex-smokers. For the truth about electronic cigarettes, you can visit the CASAA.org website.

There was recently a bill in the Utah legislature that would have prohibited several smokeless tobacco products. Those in support of the bill presented lies and half-truths similar to those that Mr. Neville did. Thankfully the legislators also got the true information about reduced-harm smoking alternatives and decided (with great majority) not to let the bill pass.

So an e-cigarette is not an FDA approved smoking cessation product. So what? They'll approve garbage like Chantix which has horrifying side effects, and the FDA approved nicotine patches, gum and lozenges have no higher success rate in the long run than quitting cold-turkey. I may still have a nicotine addiction, but using my e-cig is hundreds of times safer than smoking. That's good enough for me!

Is Aunt Esther an ECF Member? I loved this part of her comment:

As far as nicotine being addictive goes, all addictions are not created equal. One can be addicted to anything under the sun, it's how it impairs your functioning and ability to live normally that determines how dangerous the addiction is.

Our Members have saved 317,955 years of life and $3,854,278,098 by quitting smoking

We should try to gather data from all the signatures on ECF and see how many years of life people here have saved... If we could calculate that, I have a feeling it would be a HUGE number to use in comments and when fighting legislation.

"If you took the years our members have saved off the end of their lives, and stacked them end to end, our first member would be witnessing dinosaurs die out..."

I clicked one of the links on that story and came to this page:

Quit Smoking All Together: the Web's Largest Quit Smoking Community

Check out the text above the Join Now button and the cartoonish drawing to the left.

I joined this somewhere along the line (can't remember when but it was last Nov. by their records). It's pretty interesting, the second question they ask is what Pharma product you use/plan to use/used. I only gained 5 months at this point, but $6500 in cig savings. I'll have to revisit my spreadsheet though. Even with my snus purchases adjusted into their figure, I don't think my savings are that high at this point.
