Make sure the press fitting (the part of the cylinder you can't unscrew) is well seated or it might cause erratic contact with the battery.
Because of the way the electronics in the VAMO5 work, in cycles, it'll fire but your voltage will drop and not show on the LED. Look at the joint, if it's showing more than
a sixteenth of an inch gap, take your tank off, make sure the beauty ring is on, slap it it hard on the top or bottom, and it'll close the gap.

Also, make sure your battery is a good one. The fact it's showing a 70% charge doesn't necessarily mean it's pushing enough voltage/wattage.
I've had car batteries show 12.4 volts on a meter but not be able to crank the starter.

Would anyone suggest a good mod for me to save up for? I did really enjoy the vamo 5 (at first), so anything thats similar would be preferable...

"Similar" as in tube mod? Then I'd point you towards a Sigelei 20 watt mod (around $70) or a Sigelei Zmax V5 (around $60).

Similar as in performance, an MVP 20 watt for about $50.

Another thing you may want to look at is the contacts on it. The positive contact should be inspected to see that it's clean and bright. I had a battery leak on me through the top and got it dirty. After cleaning that, it came back to life for me. I've had a V5 for over a year and it's still my daily vape. I had one other issue with mine and it was the spring on the bottom. It became compressed a bit. I stretched it out and now it holds the battery in place as it should.

As HazyShades said, try a different battery with a higher amp rating. I have had a low quality battery die on me after a week of use. I know it's a regulated mod and won't take full advantage of the higher amperage, but having it there won't hurt either. Use a higher quality battery, you won't be sorry. I use the sony vct4's and don't have an issue.

Another pointer with it's use if I may, don't use the bottom cap when changing out the battery. Use the connection that's next up. The reason I say this is because when you use the bottom cap, you are moving the spring around side to side. With the next one, the tube lines up on your battery and the spring stays in place with no side to side motion.

a bit off topic but thats because the starter requires a ton of amperage that an old or cold battery might not be able to push. on topic, have you actually measured the volts its putting out with a voltmeter or multimeter? have you cleaned the coil? i find a dirty coil to put out less heat.
