Vape is harsh to begin with then loses hit

Hi all, recently started vaping and making my own vape. Still on my quest to create the perfect juice, but one thing that's been troubling me is that if I leave my vape to settle for a while, either overnight or for a while during the day, my first few drags are quite harsh at the back of my throat both on the inhale and the exhale, with less smoke. But then after 5 or 10 drags the smoke thickens up, tastes better, but I can't feel enough of a hit.

Anybody experience the same? What's the cause and/or solution?

welcome to ECF ... does the harshness have a peppery tone?

it could be the nic base.

Not peppery, at least it's never crossed my mind, just that it seems quite thin in smoke, but harsh in the throat both on the inhale and exhale. Don't get me wrong, i like a throat hit, but i've only ever found a throat hit on the inhale with ready-made juices, so am thinking my DIY juice maybe isn't mixed enough, left to steep long enough, or something else..

I did read somewhere else that it might be the nic settling at the bottom, or in the coil, and so when you start vaping, especially when it's cold, there might be more nic coming through than VG/flavour?

Sounds like your hardware is flooding. Do the first few puffs gurgle? usually when a device floods vapor is diminished and depending on how hot you run the vapor is boiling thus giving you more of a hot boiling vapor that will burn your throat. To test this blow out through the tip holding a paper towel over the air intake hole usually on the side of the RBA and see if juice vents. If so your flooded. Check your seals and make sure your device is air tight.

Is your nic in pg or vg? Vg settles at the bottom, pg at the top. You should be shaking the bottle before using, anyway. Throat hit & flavor come from pg, so less pg = less TH & less flavor. More vg = more vapor but not necessarily any additional TH, & muted flavor. Are you using a tank or dripper? It sounds like you are getting dry hits which would explain the harshness & low vapor if you are using a dripper & not dripping before you hit it. If you are using a tank & it's not sealed well, you could be losing vaucum so it's not wicking juice right.
You really should tell us what devices you are using.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I checked the tank and it doesn't seem to be leaking/flooding. I cleaned it out thoroughly and put it all back together tightly to make sure anyway. Even so, that would mean it would constantly be like that wouldn't it, rather than just when it's cold?

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm using a kangertech subox, only a couple of weeks old. The nic I use is in VG. I also have some in PG but haven't as yet noticed much difference.

Hi @dannyv45 - I just went for a puff and yes it started gurgling. I tried blowing through the tip and juice came out of the vents. What's strange though is that an hour or so ago it was fine, and i've not touched it. What's causing that then?

Then the problem is your flooding. When a vape is cold the mixture is thicker. As the mixture heats up it thins. So it seems your issue is as I thought it's flooding. You can try changing your base to a heaver VG concentration or if your adding water to the mix reduce or eliminate it. If you haven't changed your seals (O-rings) in a while then do so. You can also increase air flow if your tank is adjustable. To check for leaks you can empty the tank then put your finger over the air intake hole and suck in through the tip. Put your tonge over the tip hole and see if it holds a vacuum. If not your tank is leaking air.
