So, i'm active on all the straight razor and knife forums but am new here. I'm 31 and have been smoking since I was 15 or so with my first cigarette at 12.... I currently smoke between half a pack and a full pack of cigarettes a day.

I'm a father of an incredibly handsome 2.5yr old son and an extremely lucky husband and my little family is expecting baby #2 in October 2014.

I'm hoping to get into the hobby to not only fiddle with stuff but also to finally get away from smoking. The longest I've managed to quit for was 9 months and have done a few stints of 3-5 months over the past 5 years.

PLEASE help!

What I want: Honestly, I'm not going to fool around with cheap junk that I'll be disappointed with. I'm looking for something high end and user friendly, adjustable and EASY to repair/order parts for.

What I'm looking for is a vaping-veteran to assist me with making a purchase decision and teach me the ropes of what I need and how to go about this.

For what it's worth I'm in Greenwood, Nova Scotia Canada; anything and everything I will be buying will be online as I'm in a pretty remote area.

Im no vetran by any means but the mvp2 is my second device and I cant recomend it enough great battery live vv and vw easy to use and not terriably expensive

A ProVari seems to fit what you are looking for. It is a variable voltage APV that is well made and if repairs are required ProVape has fantastic customer service and offers a one year warranty. No APV you buy made in China will even begin to offer repair services or a one year warranty. And ProVape will repair even out of warranty for a reasonable fee.

As for a topper I would recommend a Kayfun Lite+ or a Russian 91%. Since you are interested in fiddling, these two tank systems seem to be where you want to land. They are fairly easy to rebuild with a bit of practice and know how.

Dang....y'all going high end and all out....lmao but something with vw would be awesome I wish I would of had gotten an vv or/and vw device because I still smoked while vaping but once I went to vv it just did it for me.

I also am not a veteran, but I have been vaping for about a year now and went to the slow process of stepping up from a cheap ecig to where I am now. If I were to do it all over again I would purchase a decent APV mod (provari, itaste MVP2, Itaste SVD, DNA30 device, Evic, etc).

Also, I wouldn't recommend starting off on rebuilding your own coils just yet. I am not saying you SHOULDN'T get into it, but it's good to have the experience of knowing what the flavors are supposed to taste like, what nicotine level you should be at, how much you vape each day, any whatnot.

I would recommend getting something like a Kanger Protank or something like that so you can learn from first hand what your likes and dislikes are and not have to worry about the ins and outs of resistance, shorts, wire guages, what type of wick, etc until you are comfortable and feel you are ready.

Either a ProVari or a Semovar - Both with a Kayfun or a dripper and lets not forget about us genesis guys out there. Those are probably the best bet. I got both - my ProVari is my "At Home Cigar" whereas my Semovar follows me everywhere because it's stainless steel.

Either way the devices themselves are pretty durable. The tanks, whether you go the RTA (Kayfun), RDA (Patriot), or Genesis (Z-Atty), is totally up to you and as the above stated "since you like to dabble" then all of the above options are good. I would suggest though if you DO start somewhere - ANYWHERE is better than the analog. Oh and pick up a good charger, some good batteries, an OHM READER, and a mechanical mod while you're at it - if sub-ohm vaping is in your future at all.

Genesis - Kind of a mix between both an RTA / RDA in my opinion. As they do have tanks on them, but the way they're built doesn't allow for laying it on its side for prolonged periods.

Purely for the sake of quitting smoking, get a MVP 2 and some protank II's and you will have a solid working mans set up at a real reasonable price. It has a very long lasting built in battery and a built in charger so all you do is plug it in to a mini usb plug. I strongly recommend this set up for getting off the stinkies.

You sound like the kind of guy who is going to get heavily in to Mods and mechs and no doubt you'll own a provari. You'll want to hide you credit card from yourself after a while But start with the above mentioned set up for a solid kit that will get you off the smokes while you work on your learning curve.

Here is a quote from a member on here about the difference: it's pretty spot on.

The VTR LOOKS cool, but function wise, the MVP 2.0 has it beaten by a mile. The VTR is heavier, more expensive, lesser battery life, no passthrough capabilities, fingerprint magnet, limited tank/atomizer selection with the giant recessed tank thing (unless, of course, you use the gigantic adapter), and doesn't come with batteries or a charger, To me, it seems a little silly. Looks AMAZING, but function wise, not that great compared to an MVP 2.0. Again, these are just my opinions.

Quite a few things really, two complete different set ups. Both have advantages and disadvantages. With the VTR you have a removable batteries and the tank is built in on the side. The batteries don't last as long but you can swap them out. You need to charge the batteries on a separate charger. The built in tank holder limits what toppers you can use on it without adding the extension that makes it as tall as the MVP. The VTR is really, really heavy. The VTR does have higher voltage limits but the vape is not considered by some to be as smooth as the regulated vape of the MVP.

Really, they are two different beast. I feel the MVP is smaller and easier to carry and care for.

if you have the money then yes a provari would be a good high end APV to purchase, however it is quite costly....
Some things to keep in mind, you can usually get a better deal on making your own pieced together "kit" with better quality items than preset kits

I would suggest normally to start out with a variable voltage ego spinner, a glass protank (bottom coil) and a metal vivi nova (top coil), I would still say get one for back up/emergencies
but sounds like you are wanting to jump right in to more advanced mods and at that a Regulated mod so let me make a suggestion
if you don't mind shopping from china and can wait a month or so on shipping...fasttech.com is the walmart of vaping. They sell some authentics but mostly knock offs for dirt cheap

Some things to keep in mind:

• Try to stick to pv's (personal vapors) that have both the 510 and ego connections this way you have all kinds of options when it comes to juice delivery systems.
• Variable Voltage (vv) = everyone's taste is different so you can set your voltage up or down to help suit your needs as well as different juices and different juice delivery systems (cartomizers, tanks, ect) taste different at different voltages. (how many times can I say different)
• Variable Wattage (vw) I haven't tried yet but assuming it is the same principle as stated above for vv.
• Pass-through battery to be able to vape while charging.
• the higher the mAh the longer the battery life
• do you prefer a warm vape (top coil) or a cool vape (bottom coil)? top coil vs bottom coil tanks, to each their own...but go with glass or metal so that there's no worries about tank cracking juices.

Just go with clearomizers with factory pre made coils for now. You can play around with the others as time goes by and see what works the best for you.
