I guess there were just better manners in the UK then.Actually, before the anti-smoking hysteria began a couple of decades ago, people did smoke just about everywhere. Granted, generally not in churches... When I first joined the Army, there was a smoking area, with comfortable easy-chairs and big ashtrays, right in the middle of the main room of the library on post.
You're right, though: We didn't "consider" it at all. We thought nothing of it. It was no different than drinking a coke or eating a candy bar. Now it's a mortal sin.
All a matter of perspective, I suppose.
