It is a dangerous paper. It is written by Nobel Prize winner. People will listen.

I do not want to talk whether authors were right or wrong (Nobel Prize winner is an old guy, may be not with all bearings in place, but nevertheless…) I want to talk about vaping industry which in not our (vapers) friend. It is almost mature now. It is aggressively moving to expand its buyers/users pool. It is advertising:
As the federal government moves to set rules that would ban the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors, a new study shows that TV ads for the products have increased dramatically during programs most likely to be watched by adolescents and young adults.

According to the study published online today by the journal Pediatrics, between 2011 and 2013 exposure to e-cigarette TV ads increased by 256% among adolescents ages 12 to 17 and by 321% among young adults, ages 18 to 24.

An 'explosion' of youth exposure to e-cigarette TV ads

And number of youths using e-cigs is growing:

Between 2011-2013, the number of never-smoking youth who used e-cigarettes increased three-fold, from 79,000 to over 263,000.
Intentions to smoke cigarettes among never-smoking U.S. middle and high school electronic cigarette users, National Youth Tobacco Survey, 2011-2013

And society is bound to protect minors from ill-advised behavior. Behavior encouraged by vaping industry. It (industry) tries to picture vaping as completely harmless non-addicting pleasure. Yes, it wants to recruit new customers. Yes, any industry will do everything to achieve it. Nothing new. Except that as a ex-smoker I want to protect vaping industry for as long as there are ex-smokers, but its aggressive stance works against my interests. I believe it is self-destructing behavior. I even hope it (in my perfect alien word vaping industry will die out when the last ex-smoker dies) will disappear in future.

I do need vaping industry for now. I am tolerating it for as long as there are smokers who want to quit. I wish more smokers will switch to vaping. I wish vaping industry to die out in as near future as possible.

When are adolescents and young adults most likely to watch TV? Could that be during the evening and at weekends?

And when are adults most likely to watch TV? Could that also be during evenings and at weekends?

What a strange coincidence!

..

The number who have ever used an electric cigarette will include those who have tried it only once because they were curious.

I once tried brussels sprouts for exactly the same reason...

Brussels sprouts ...

Now THERE is something that should be banned, for the good of humanity !

Oh no! Don't take my brussels sprouts! my little cabbages! they're good for the chillen too!
I just imagined a march to save the brussels sprouts with people waving branches of them.

guess I'm in another minority group here. I love 'em - sauted with bacon or pancetta.. :p

No, they're horrid! :nah: Give me regular cabbage (especially Savoy cabbage) any day of the week. Lightly steamed, knob of butter, grind of black pepper - yum!

Also, sprouts completely ruin bubble and squeak and that's a crime I can't forgive!

And society is bound to protect minors from ill-advised behavior.

Society (to some degree), yes. Government, no. Protecting and educating children is the responsibility, first and foremost, of their parents. Some parents, regrettably, choose to abdicate that responsibility and expect government to do the job for them. But those parents are not a majority, or anything close to one. This whole idea that we have to restrict the rights of adult consumers in order to promote desirable behavior among poorly-parented children is wrongheaded, counterproductive, and hostile to the principle of individual self-determination.

Behavior encouraged by vaping industry. It (industry) tries to picture vaping as completely harmless non-addicting pleasure.

I'm not really sure what you're talking about here. "Harmless" would be a prohibited health claim, and every vapor product I've ever purchased (or even seen) contains a disclaimer on the package that nicotine is an addictive substance (a statement which may not even be true, but that's a different matter entirely).

Yes, it wants to recruit new customers. Yes, any industry will do everything to achieve it.

The industry in question, as I alluded to above, is subject to quite extensive legal restrictions on how it's allowed to market its wares.

Nothing new. Except that as a ex-smoker I want to protect vaping industry for as long as there are ex-smokers, but its aggressive stance works against my interests.

I'm curious as to what behavior from the vapor industry you regard as "aggressive," and whether you would apply that descriptor to any other industry's representatives who engaged in that same behavior. Is it inherently "aggressive" to portray your product as an enjoyable thing that people might like to use? Where I come from, that's the #1 principle of commercial advertising.

I believe it is self-destructing behavior. I even hope it (in my perfect alien word vaping industry will die out when the last ex-smoker dies) will disappear in future.

You seem to think the only acceptable function of vapor products is smoking cessation. Thus, it follows that you don't think they should be consumer products at all, and should only be available by doctor's prescription.

I do need vaping industry for now. I am tolerating it for as long as there are smokers who want to quit. I wish more smokers will switch to vaping. I wish vaping industry to die out in as near future as possible.

Most of us here are long since past the point of smoking cessation. We vape because it's an enjoyable activity from which we derive pleasure. I don't understand why you seemingly find this so abhorrent, or why you see the need for the vapor industry to die out or be killed.

Please. Anything can be a gateway to anything if you have an addictive personality (Hi guys, I'm Adam and I have an addictive personality!) but i have a hard time believing that if someone starts on vaping, in all it's deliciousness and all the ways you can customize your experience that they would switch to traditional cigarettes. But hey, never underestimate stupidity.
