Island culture is different from mainland culture. Fads and crazes spread faster and die faster. If the kids in HI decide they have to try ecigs they will and it will grow exponentially fast and it will decline and die out just as fast. The question is how many will become regular users six months or a year from now. I predict that number will be small and most of them will be medicating a pre existing tobacco issue.

What bothers me is when they cite more kids having accurate perceptions as being a concern. Cigarettes amoung youth was 'daring' and doing something risky without, or in defiance of, adult permission. If kids percieve it as non-risky - it breaks the mold. If, in fact its only as risky as red bull, and they know it, then its no longer an act of defiance? The defiance of teenage is still going on, its human behaviour built-in, ecigs aren't replacing smoking for that. Its still going on, but somehow else.

Is it 'regretable' permanant record - social media posts? Skateboarding without a helmet? Dirty Dancing? OMG now I'm an old fogey who can't understand youth culture enough to recognize where the defiance that used to be smoking has been rechanneled! Those even-older fogeys who have been doing TC since the days of 'light' cigs must be even more confounded.

That sort of defiance seems to be expressed now mostly in green or blue hair. At least it's more cheerful than goth black. :D
