Vaping in Australia

Wanted to post this in the Aust/N.Z. forum but can't because I'm new here but.. I'm heading to Australia shortly and was wondering how public perception of vaping is. I've switched from ciggies recently and am thinking how I'll manage in Australia for a while.
Can I vape walking down the street without worrying about getting stopped by police?

from what Ive read... tobacco and products is/are almost a controlled substance....
