Welcome to the forum Gat, and thank you for raising this topic. It never hurts to bring it up every now & then, especially for newer vapers who might not realize the distinction here.
Here's the thing: you can legally vape in any public place. But a Timmies is not a public place. It's a private business on private property, only provisionally open to the public. They make the rules.
There's no law that says people have to wear shoes or shirts, for example...but a private business on private property can make such a rule for their customers. They have the right to refuse service. If you ignore their rules, refuse to comply when asked to, and then still refuse to leave - they can call the police & say "hey, this person won't follow our rules & won't leave - they're trespassing." It's essentially the same kind of deal as if you were in someone's home. It's not a public place! If they want you to stop doing something or go...those are your only choices, lol.
Timmies in particular is a place where it's just not wise to vape...at least, I've always gotten that vibe from there y'know? A lot of families, etc in a relatively small, crowded space. I don't know...maybe some locations are more cool with it than others. I've vaped in malls & all kinds of stores before, and there's never been a problem to date. But if someone had asked me to stop in those places, I would've stopped. Most places that we think of as "public" aren't really public.
A government office is a public place, and you can vape there till the cows come home. I know I have, openly. Amazingly, none of the people working there really took notice. Like they saw it, but they didn't look surprised or shocked or offended. No one stared or pointed; no one asked me to stop. So yay.
Every vaper should bear these things in mind when they're out & about. Be nice & respectful...and know your rights are, and what they aren't. Happy vaping!
