We're not born with an innate knowledge of battery safety.
We only know what we're exposed to.
We're educated because we read about it on ECF or get schooled by friends etc.
Some people just want to quit smoking. That should be harm reduction not a minefield.

The vape industry needs to make battery safety education a top priority :2c:

This is like the fourth one in a few weeks that put a spare battery in his pocket loose.

They are The Stepford Wives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia in E.S.P communication globally.
A sect of lizard men aliens has placed them on Earth to confound Lisp programmers who also
enjoy vaping. The lizard men aliens are in cohorts with the evil bugs from space. We must begin
elimination of them from the atoms outward. Let us pray, ...

"Oh holy lambda grant us the beans, erm, wisdoms to remove the great Leviathan from our midsts.
Give us our daily lentils so that we may quake furious with flatulence against the evil doers. Ohm,
lambda lambda mechi hi mechi ho, may the pod be with you. And by garbanzo it be done!"

Yes, I was one of those "stooopid" people who, once I started vaping, attended (by reading) Battery University.

Look, I really had NO exposure to loose batteries, really. Nobody had ever even told me about non lithium batteries. I didn't use high powered flashlights or fly RCs, etc. I didn't even own a cordless drill. :)

I could LIKE your post 1,000 times.

It's like people who complain about the kids in their neighborhood who seem to lack goals and have bad parents. Why not volunteer to be a Big Brother or Big Sister, or something like that, instead of just dissing and complaining? Kids could use somebody to set them straight, and if you enjoy helping others you get more out of it than they do.

I see no reason not to be pleased that this TV segment upped the ante on telling people that batteries ARE safe in knowledgeable hands. People will be encouraged to be knowledgeable in order to avoid a bad incident, IMHO.

There is nothing to stop people from stopping in at their local vape shop and asking the people there IF they ARE doing some sort of battery safety with new customers......they should consider it for sure. (I gave up on mine, he laughed and admitted to charging batts overnight unattended.....luckily he went out of biz a few months ago...he was a hardhead.)

I just don't understand how someone could have grown to adulthood without hearing about or seeing a battery explode or boil and errupt.

It's power in a little box, pouch or can...

I remember the "electric potato" from grade school, or touching your tongue to both posts on a 9v battery completes a circuit and power is released.

It doesn't take a scholar to understand this stuff especially since they teach (read taught) some of it along side coloring in the lines.

Needless to say I have a hard time feeling bad for these folks.

I wonder what brand and type of battery he used.
A IMR or hybrid battery shouln't realy vent in such a volatile way.

Probably ICR battery, if i would have to guess.

Edit:
Makes me remember when i had spare AA's for my casette player, in my pocket when i was a kid, they somehow shorted out. Luckily they only got super hot.

Since then i've always had great respect for batteries, so that's way before vaping was a thing.

Those of us with a lick of sense may as well start digging in now. :glare:

Its the early morning and like always, I am reading the news. I came upon the exploding battery story and I responded. I have login accounts with a few of the major news services and I think they are beneficial.

I came here and there are several threads that I could have brought this up in, but I can't duplicate. People talk about the industry doing more, or...whatever. We can do more by simply writing in the comments a quick paragraph about how battery cases/sleeves are promoted and/or readily available.

There was a discussion about civil disobedience and there were good points. Writing in response to news articles, writing to local papers, and our representatives does help. Getting a responsible comment or letter on safety and our success will help the industry.

It will help the people.

There was a similar story here in Dallas a few weeks ago. Guy with an unprotected battery in his pocket had a short and caught himself on fire. It didn't make the "big news" though because the guy stepped up and admitted to what he did wrong. He says he may sue the battery manufacturer to make a safer wrap for the battery, but admits the problem was him dropping loose change into his pocket with an unprotected battery in it.

I do agree with him on the point that every vape shop that sells batteries should also sell protective cases, and should explain to customers why they need the protective case.

Why not just make it so you can't sell a loose LI battery without a protective case?

I'd agree, only I think they already try to. I have bought mods that came with battery safety information, most online vendors make a point of having statements about battery safety, and while I can't speak for all B&M's the only local one I will actually go to made sure I know about battery safety the first time I was in there, because I was buying a mod and they were throwing in a battery with it. (LGHE2 in case anyone is concerned about the possibility of it being a cheap unknown rewrap)

As a kid, we were encouraged to "test" 9 volt batteries by touching them to our tongues. The message most of us get from this is that batteries are perfectly safe. In 45 years, I never once heard about any actual danger from batteries, other than alkalines exploding because someone tried to charge them, and the laptop and cell phone batteries that were recalled (so the message we got from that is clearly they were flawed.) So yes, the general the public thinks all batteries are safe except for ones that are flawed.
