Does the word "ohmage" bother anyone else?

I mean, I get it: voltage... Ohmage... Right?

But seriously, my skin crawls and my eyelids twitch when I hear/see this word. I feel like it is detrimental to the vaping cause to have Vapers going around saying things like this. It makes us all look dumb IMHO. Anyone with me?

With you. As an ex tech instructor who taught DC electrical diagnostics... improper terminology tightens my jaw considerably.

Saying that... good luck getting people who've encountered electrical terms only yesterday - and that from their buddy who learned his or her first word last week - to give a rat's rectum about using correct terms.

Glad to hear I'm not alone in this. I can only imagine how much more acute your suffering is with your background!

For me, as a Stationary/Steam Engineer I have the same reaction when I hear "Cold Steam". Its a wonder there aren't any bones in my boiler's firebox!

I realize that there are a lot of people brand-spanking new to this - heck, I've only been vaping for a hair over a month - but good gods, people! We need to edjamacate 'em more better and whatnot.

Have to face facts... the vast majority of vapists do not have tech backgrounds, nor do they have much of an interest in learning, other than the bare minimum they need not to get hurt.

At least the internet has been good for one thing in this regard... fear. Just enough trepidation that they at least ask... the most common question I encounter being - "how many wraps to make a 'X' coil... cause dude, I wanna blow clouds!".

I'm afraid you can't regulate proper terms... anymore than you can regulate ignorance. The lack of both is, sadly, disturbing.

Agreed.

It's truly a shame that the biggest YouTube personas propagate incorrect terminology. They are the face of our community, and (most, but not all ) sound like idiots.

I too have a technical background (mechanical engineering), but the use of the non-word 'ohmage' does not bother me to the same extent that other things I see on the forum do...

I get far more vexed at seeing people constantly misusing words, basic English specifically (nothing to do with Americanisms).
Words such as:
There/They're/Their
Your/You're
To/Two/Too

Now, I understand that a lot of people type quickly and spelling mistakes happen, but seriously, not being able to differentiate between the meanings of the above words by the age of 18 (assuming all posters are over 18 on this forum) is alarming to me.

I may come across as an English language snob, but if I am reading posts and I see a multitude of these errors I instantly think the poster is a ..... and therefore whatever they write is to be ignored.

It is like when you see comments on Youtube, where one poster writes in response to another "your stupid". (In all honesty I love the irony of those posts)

Totally with you on that as well.

You forgot: lose/loose. I HATE that one.

I definitely get the hate on improper terms. Just makes communication difficult. I grow mushrooms, which requires some very precise sterile work. The problem is that in order to keep up with the cutting edge I have to go to the discussions about the illegal ones. Those hippies will just straight-up make up new words or slap their name on an old technique. Makes it really hard to keep up if you're not reading every day.

It must be your avatar. :)

It's true that it makes concise communication difficult, but also, the newer generations of Vapers (As well as other "hobbies" as you pointed out) tend to utilize the internet as their main source of information. When those putting forth said information (looked upon as "The Experts") use a jargon that includes fabricated/nonsensical/.......ized/or just plain incorrect terminology, that terminology tends to be adopted rather quickly. Now we have Vapers who can tell you the " ohmage on their Atty" but neither know nor understand the concepts of resistance or atomization.

Now, granted, one does not need to understand either to actually vape, but I feel that this "dumbing-down" of basic terminology makes us all look like fools. And no one should use words that they do not understand.

Vaping is under attack. Has been for a while. This is not new information. I feel that it is as important to instruct newer vapers/ists on battery safety & why one should not need to hold their mod with an oven mitt to vape on it, as it is instructing them from the ground up in the basic principles governing 'The Arte of Rebuilding'. This, at least, would improve the appearance of vapers in positive way by showing the opposition that we are intelligent and informed adults pursuing an activity that requires us to learn things we may not have otherwise learned - and that we did indeed do our homework.

Having people believe that terms and concepts such as Ohm, Ohm's Law, Atomizer, Atomization, Resistance, Amperage, Voltage, Wattage, Venturi, et cetera were created for Vaping paraphernalia is disturbing at best, and that is exactly what seems to be happening.

Maybe we need to write a full primer on "So you want to be a Vaper/Electrical Engineer/Burner Technician/Alchemist/Stationary Engineer/Mechanic/Physicist/Fluid Dynamics Specialist/Metallurgist?" And send it out to those in the limelight so they can pass on a better basic understanding of the elements involved to the newer generations...
